loofas

Bethany, OK

I am growing loofas and my male flowers don't open so I can pollinate. I would like to see a male and female side by side.

Try this link. The flowers are generic gourd, but I imagine that the loofahs that you have will look similar. See how the female has the pistil in the middle?

http://www.luffa.info/ this site had a little information on them.

I'm growing them for the first time this year :) I won't get loofahs; my dad accidentally killed my first one. So I planted another 3 just to see if they would actually survive and they have so far; I'm going to get started early next year and get them outside and growing early.

here is one female luffa flower (the yellow one), the male flowers are always in a cluster and open one at a time. If you look closely, the little buds in the middle bottom part of this photo are some male flowers.

By the way, the white flower is snake gourd flower, isn't it pretty?

The snake gourd has an unusual flower; it's very pretty.
