Tropical Garden # 49

Red Oak, TX

Rj, I finally got a fish tail Palm. It will look like yours in 4-5 years. This one is only 4 ft tall, I have it on top of the spa to avoid getting the dead grass in the picture.

Gorgeous picture's everyone!

Joeswife, does the moonflower (Ipomoea, alba) re-seed in your part of the world? This is my first time with growing this vine.

That's beautiful Rita- That looks like total fish tail palm! Mine is a Fox tail Fish tail hybrid.
The fish tails are pretty spectacular when they get bigger.

I've always wanted one of those but was afraid I would kill it in the winter.

Rita's fish tail palm caught my attention as well.

R.J. can you apply a picture of your foxtail fish palm ;-) Sound's like a nice Palm as well;-)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I will, it looks more like a fox tail than anything-
It's kind of ..mmm...blended with vines right now, but will take a photo

Jeri, gorgeous plumeria.

That fishtail looks like Caryota mitis. I find they look better if kept small, but they spread like weeds here, the seeds are spread by birds and flying foxes.

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

blended with vines huh? I guess we need to let Brian get a hold of that area of the garden.

Rita I see you included the name with the hibbie--yeah--such a pretty one. I leave for work and my hibbie blooms aren't opened and by the time I look at them in the evening, they have opened but aren't near as pretty as they are in the late morning. Bummer!

Love the color of the plumie, jeri.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Thanks Yall!!! Does anyone recognize it? I had everything labeled and between the storms and cats 1/2 aren't labeled anymore!!!! Unfortunately that was one that lost it's label. I think if I ever get them re-labeled I'm sticking it to the pot but then I have to up- size before you know it and the label is on the wrong pot. Sa la vi'!!!!

I grow a fishtail palm as a houseplant. That poor thing gets little attention and yet it looks beautiful all the time. Great plant to have.

rita yours is great, randy I'd like to see a pic of foxtail fish palm, sounds interesting.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

It's impossible to get a good picture because of the confine space and the overgrown neglected garden. It looks mostly like a fox tail. I can't believe how much it's grown, I didn't realize it till I went looking for an old picture of it. It was about my height when I got it, it's twice as high now.

a better frond. I've learned not to pay attention to tags from this area any more as I've had several thing I.D. here at DG that are significantly different than what the tags say, and I wouldn't know a Fox tail from a Cat Tail in the palm arena. I got it on clearance about 3 years ago.
Working 6 days a week this summer has left a lot of work for me to do this fall, it's complete Jungle in the garden!

love it. the leaves are definitely longer than reg. fishtail palm. No question it is two diff. plants. yours is lovely. Do you protect in winter?

Aren't you loving the cooler evenings? I have gone from watering daily to every other day. Also the tropicals have gone on a growing spurt. No Jungle Heights, but a pitiful likeness, lol.

I am loving the cooler evenings and mornings..so are the plants.
Yes, I've also noticed the plants retain moisture for a whole day even at 92F.
