ooook... boy, i am exhausted!

Got up this morning and went over to a co-workers house to pick up 1 ton of flagstone. apparently, some idea they had to make a patio out of it didnt quite happen, so he offered it to me as he knew i was hunting for edging for my flower beds. over $200 worth of stone! i just couldnt believe they were gonna just throw it away if i didnt want it! Amazing how people just throw money away.

ok, so I went over, and in 3 separate cars (none of us have a truck tee hee) we loaded flagstones into trunks, backseats, and floorboards and anywhere else we could stuff them... then hauled then to my house and unloaded. in 90 degree weather with 88% humidity!

Took a lunch break, then my son and I proceeded to start lining the edge of the front beds with them. im not doing anything special other than laying them down... weed wacker will take care of the outside... weed killer and pulling will take care of the inside...

and now I need a nice shower and a loooooong nap

The sunflowers are great Al. Now if I can get to them before the crows....LOL

Welcome Skiekitty. Glad you joined us. If they produce seeds you should be able to save and germinate them. I do with zinnias and other annuals. How to do it I'm not sure. Robin gave us some links for seed saving. You might find the info here:

Hi all,

Before anyone starts to use the Beer Fertilizer on their plants, please read the posts that markroy68 has added to this thread in the hoya forum titled: Beer Fertilizer Revisited.

Mark has taken an excerpt from the book: "The Truth About Garden Remedies", by Dr. Jeff Gillman, Timber Press, 2006. Dr. Gillman has a doctorate in plant sciences and is a professor at the University of Minnesota. Mark.is quoting text from a book written by Dr. Gillman from the University of MN.

In a nutshell, Dr. Gillman says DON'T ever use the beer fertilizer on your plants. Any benefit that you might see from using the beer fertilizer is coming from the actual fertilizer you added to the mixture and not from any of the other ingredients. Actually, the other ingredients may actually be harming your plants.

Mark's posts start immediately after the photo of the beautiful Epiphyllum about half way down the thread.
HTH.

Hi Treelover

Thanks for the info. Nice to have the science. Don't tell this to the Brug forum though I think they all use a combination of Cue's ingredients. LOL Maybe the Brugs like beer.

Interesting discussion on the beer fert! Thanks, Mike, for posting the link!

Kelly

Wow Mechelle! You are fast. Looks great. I'm slow going with mine. I have the paper, the manure and still working on the green layer. Have to wack stuff to fill the space. LOL I'm afraid to use weeds. Good work!!

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

here's the one I started for the veggie garden.. gotta get more cheap plywood to finish it. We had a cedar tree that went down in a storm out here and I thought I would border it with cedar logs since they don't rot, but nah... don't have enough and don't like how it looks. I was thinking of putting morning glories in behind the boxes to vine on the wire fence. What do you guys think?

I think I am going to have my hubby make me some large bins for leaves, grass cuttings and horse manure... hmmm the possibilities.. You guys have created a HUGE MONSTER muah ha ha ! lol, ok I'm really leavin' now.. peace out!

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Oh cue lucky you for getting the stone for free. What you are calling flag stone there we call it creek stone. I have been paying 60.00 for a ton and a half each month til I get enough to do my rock garden and line the outsides of the flower beds.

I think your veggies will hide the fence Mechelle. Check out the thread by Joy on companion planting. Nasturtiums might be another choice. Bug repellents. They are also delicious in salads etc.

Hey everybody, I just wanted to stop in and introduce myself and say thank-you so much... I just recieved my newbie seed packets in the mail today and they are soo great! This is such a wonderful way of welcomeing new members! I've been reading your posts on here and on some of the other forums, and I have to say, it feels like one big happy family. Thanks again for making me feel so welcome.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Yeah we are close to the source. If I would go buy it from a stone place it would cost me 310.00 a ton. A friend of ours has a creek that runs thru his propery and he gets it for me. We have a truck so I can knock off the haul bill and get it fairly cheap that way. I can remember when we use to haul it and sell it to places and you could get it for about 20.00 a ton then but people found out it was very useful and got popular and zoom up went the price like everything else.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Hi GJ ,Glad to have you . Lots of crazies on here but we have fun!!!!!

Welcome grannyjanie. Make yourself at home here the more the merrier is what we say.
HI Robin how were the blueberries this time?
Cue that was a great deal on the flagstones. I'm lucky if I want flat rocks all I have to do is go to the creek after insisting DH help me get there and back via his utility vehcile with a bed. Lucky for him his mom had made a bed with flat rocks which he dozed down the hill and I'm still finding them when I dig up my flower beds. Found a nice little collection in the bed I'm doing the lasagna in.

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

only five quarts..I think they are just behind schedule...I hope anyway I am going to go back next weekend...

Welcome Grannyjanie,

We're glad to have you join us! Isn't it like Christmas to get those seeds? We've all found it to be quite addictive. LOL Just can't get enough. Nice thing is after awhile Robin figures out how to entice us to give some of our stash up for the Newbies and we are compelled to order more. LOL

Big Storm Arejay. I'm off line for awhile. See ya later.

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)
