CLOSED: Seed Junkie Chit Chat - Newbies Welcome 08/18/09

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

We came from here:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1025275/

Ok girls and guys.. this is where the chitty chat will now take place.. the Free Seed For Newbies thread is now only for newbies seeking directions for their packs.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

For those of you helping Arejay and Flower with newboe dmails, you will ow need to copy the new 'Free Seed For Newbie" link and paste it into your letter. you should not have to do this again, as that thread will be the last one we create for 'Free Seeds For Newbies"

you may, if you wish, copy and paste the new chat thread into your letter as well, so that newbies can find the current thread. or simply say something like :

'be sure to drop into the current 'Seed Junkie Chit Chat' thread and introduce yourself!"

Hornell, NY(Zone 5a)

Good idea Cue - keeping the newbie seed seekers separate from us chit chatters. They were likely hopelessly confused with the other thread.

Went to our local county fair today. Saw lots of kids and animals. That's what the fair's all about, kids and animals. Took my 2 year old granddaughter for the first time, really enjoyed it. She just loved the fair scene, especially the animals. I enjoyed the manditory funnel cake myself.

HI Everyone. Zones 7 and 8 are done. I haven't typed that much even with pasting since I quit work.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hi, everyone. Long time no see, Al. Good idea on the chit chat thread, cue!

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

cue I don't seem to be able to get that done. HELP. Just send me a dmail with all of it in there and the I can take it from there PLEASE. I am a dummy when it comes to doing those things.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Thanks for doing those Mindy. We will handle it until arejay gets back and maybe she can talk a couple of gals into taking those 4 zones.

Hey gals would appreciate if some of you could donate just a little time to send newbie dmails out from zones3/4m and zones 7/8. Would really be a big help. PLSE Thnxs

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Flower.. copy and paste this into the dmail....

Welcome To DG!

Good evening everyone. Been a busy day. If you haven't been to the Brug sprout off check out the pictures. So pretty.

I like the chit chat idea. I got lost in the chit chat as a newbie. Everyone seemed to know each other and it felt awkward to just jump in. Not only was I a newbie to DG but to forums as well.

Great idea Cue. I think the reorganization ideas will help everyone.

Spooner, WI

Once La Boheme is done (this weekend), I'll have more time & could help send emails (I'm a newbie myself, but it helps to keep me out of trouble!)

So, does anyone have any idea how to harvest seeds from Touch-me-nots without having them shoot all over the place? There are a TON of these plants (wild) on the corner, and I'd like to get some seeds. When do they have seeds ready? Any input would be appreciated.

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

ptilda, if you have access to a Walmart or $ store, buy some fabric favor bags. They come 10 to a pack and have a drawstring top. Tie the little bag over the seed pods . Leave on plant until pods open, then carefully remove and let them dry on paper towels or paper plate. Do not put them in a window as you don't want to cook them.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

OH I gotta ask what is La Boheme ?

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

LOL.. I was kinda wondering that myself flower... hehehe

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Good morning Everyone
My efforts seem to have resulted in about 4 newbies sending envies. Had 3 duplicates but got thanks from them.
Already checked my zones for new signups too.
Yes, Seray I seen those pictures on the Sprout Off thread. Already got spots picked out for them too. Cue that was a great chant you came up with.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

lol. Mindy - i brought that problem up to arejay... about newbies sending envies tot he wrong people.. I went in to the free seed for Newbie thread and made it CLEAR who they are to send SASBE too, also make it clear in my dmails to newbies... so hopefully, with a little tweaking, it will get better shortly :)

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Evetryone volunteering to send dmails to newbies!!!!!

this is the link you need to copy and past or type into your dmails... it is the new permanent link for the FSFN ....

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1028717/

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Cue. They are sending to Robin just sending me dmails in answer to the one I sent them LOL.
Now I need links to the other threads we are currently using for the fun and games. One asked me where they are. Sent her to them but didn't know how to get all the links at once in the dmail at the time. Do now though just takes awhile for my brain to wake up completely in the mornings I'm an afternoon to evening person as far as my brain is concerned. LOL

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

lol, here is what I do:

open up a document in MS Word, type out the letter, copy and paste all links into that letter.. then copy the entire letter and paste into newbie dmails. only have to copy once.. can paste to your hearts content lol.

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Yep that's what I figured out all by myself LOL. Are you off today?

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

BOY you people are smarties ! I guess I am just totally computer illiterate. I am just not a smart one when it comes to this stuff and have a very hard time of comprehending it.

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Flower you can do it you just need someone to show you how. Maybe there's a free computer class in your area you can take sometime?
You can always practice on me LOL and I'll tell you when you have it perfect.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

LOL I have taken a class when I first got on this thing but apparently nothing soaked in. I have had a computer for about 9 years now and do know somewhat more than I did but it just takes forever for it to stick with me of what does what. DH knows a lot by just doing and he tries to show me and we get it done but then when I have to do it again I have to get him to help AGAIN. I just don't remember it. It is there and gone. Know what I mean.

(Darla) Dubuque, IA(Zone 5a)

Hi everyone,

Thank you Flowerfantasy for the Dmail.

I'm new to DG and think this site is awesome. You all seem to have a really goodtime on here so I thought I would come join in the FUN!!!

I have quite a few flowers and would really like to start sharing some with others. Just am unsure on where to start.I know most by the common names . (example) I have 8 clematis and unsure of what names some are. Guess I better get to reading more. LOL

Looking forward to all the fun,
Darla

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hiya Darla! Welcome!

We are a fun bunch . . .

Kelly

Hi Darla,

Ditto on the welcome! You'll quickly learn how to share your plants and seeds. If you know the common name the 'plant files' is the place to go to get the botanical ones. If you're like me you'll have to look them up more than once. LOL

Sherri

Morning Everyone :)

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Hey Flower.. I could probably do zone 7/8.. How often do you check for new members? I think I could handle that.. You'll have to tell me how you find them, too.

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Flower do you have a member called Cabindweller in your Zones. Signed up in July. One of mine asked me to make sure that one was included in our find the newbies search. Lives in Monticello MN. Couldn't find that one on my list. And I second Mechele on the question of how you and Robin go about finding the new members? Currently I'm checking the member list on the last page to see if anyone new signed up.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Hi all! Even though I am a newbie too, I would be able to help some with zone 3/4, if you still need someone to help. Don't know much, but usually can figure the computer out eventually. As I am still trying to figure out seed collecting, and planting new beds, landscaping, etc. I don't have a lot I can offer along those lines, but can offer some time to help with other things. Just my little way of returning all the freebie seeds, plants, help, advice, etc. What a great place to hang out!

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Welcome skellogg. Flowerfantasy has zones 3/4 so she will let you know about that. Feel free to ask questions someone here will likely know the answer.
Margaret

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

That would be great,Thanks
Go to communities and on the right hand side you will see a list and down it there somewhere is a members list , just click on it and it will take you to where you need to be You will want to click on the subscribers only and it will bring up the paid subscriptions and those are the ones you will want to dmail. Right now they all have been taken care of. You will most likely want to check at least once a day . They have people joining almost everyday and you can either do them as they come up or wait until late evening to do them. Don't go back any farther than Jan of this year. Most, even back that far have already gotten seed but just to make sure send one anyway and they will let you know if they have gotten a packet or not.

Again a great big Thank you for doing this.

Hi,
Newbie here. Hope this is the right place to ask this ?
On my trade list, I have one have and one want -- and it says there's a match.
Does that mean someone has what I want and wants what I have? How do consumate this trade or am I not understanding?
I can't figure out how to find out who has the match either.
Thanks,
Snarl

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Skellog, it would be great if you would want to do zone 3/4. They are small compare to the others, Just follow the directions that I gave to Mechelle and do the same thing with your zones.

Big Thank You for doing this.

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Big Welcome to Skellog and Darla! ;-)

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Ok Snarly just go to whom ever has what you want ,dmail them and ask about a trade. What they would like in return or for postage or if they want the one you have. Just click on their name and it will bring up a thing where it tells you different things about them and it will have dmail whom ever and click on it and just type away and then send it.

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Ok flower, figured out how to find the New Members.. The most recent in my zone was Aug 15.. Already done right? Can you send me the letter I need to send or do I just copy the link that Cue posted?

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Snarly here's the link that lists who wants and who has available the rose of sharon you want.
http://davesgarden.com/community/trading/search.php?search_text=PFPID:48615
Check for the available ones in the first column then in the second column you will see a user name listed you can click and it will bring up their member page. On the member page click the send dmail to so and so and ask if they would be interested in a trade. I like to check their have lists first to see if I have anything they want and if I do I ask if they will trade for whatever I find. If they don't then I just ask them what they would want.
Do the same for your chocolate flower only check for wanted. I would check these people's have list to see if they have something I would like to have in trade. You will find the members want and have list at the top of the plant files listing for the plant you are interested in just under the names for it look for a pair of eyes.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

somewhere in this thread, I left an entire letter for those who wish to copy and use it... feel free to do so mechelle, it would make life easier on ya...lol

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

And copy it to a word document and save on your computer so you won't have to hunt it up on here everytime you want it. That way you can copy and paste from word into the dmail you are sending.

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Mechelle go to the top of this thread and about 4or 5 down cue put up a letter to use . Use it so much easier. LOL

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

I always just leave one of the dmails in my mail and use it after I get one sent. Easier for me.
