Spraying the weeds and grass before you till is certainly a good idea.Although, you do not want your garden area to drain into any water source. Any fertilizer or other garden chemical should never be allowed to run off into a water source.

Hi Tony and Nathan Brown:

A dream come true to farm--suggest contacting your local farmers association, also any state help. They will work with you when it comes to saving the land, sparing drainage problems to natural water sources, and wildlife of course. You mentioned your son-he may wish to become a member of FFA (future farmers of America)-scholarships are awarded etc.. We have a wildlife habitat garden here up north in a big city and blackberries was the first fruit shrub planted for the wildlife to be protected--could hide among. Watch out for those thorns; the worst ever found. A number of years back we used the remainder of the years dieback to scare off squirrels from going into the lilly patch. Approximately 2" in height, buried the thorn sticks in the soil among the lillies and yelp! The squirrels have never returned for over 7 years now to that area of the garden--all wildlife critters walk around and not through, even the cats--amazing. Good Luck
God Bless all your future harvests.
