Daily Pics Vol. 238

Melbourne, FL

Congrats on the Oriole. I get them here during the winter, and always love seeing them.

Joshua, TX

oh nanny, how cute. I probably would have watched them all day. Guess that hummer thought the bunting was handsome:) That is so odd, but so cute and interesting! Thanks for sharing!

CuteRobins, Nanny.

Methodical, wonderful Osprey shots.

I'm wondering if anyone who has observed Ospreys has ever seen the adult male going into a submissive pose every time his mate lands on the nest. I've been watching Dad and Big Hook for over two months and with activity increasing over the last few weeks, they have been spending a lot of time either on the nest together, or coming and going. When he is on the nest and becomes aware that she's coming in for a landing he immediately starts to assume a submissive posture, with head down, wings out and crouching low, whilst scuttling forward towards the edge of the nest. She is never, ever aggressive towards him and after a few seconds he gets himself upright again. My friend who has observed this nest for the past 4 years says he's never seen it happening before and we wonder if it's some form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder he has, because of the treatment he received from darling Old Ma Osprey last season. It is most definitely not the same sort of response in order to avoid talons, where they will avert their gaze and the nictitating membrane comes across the eyes until the potential for injury has passed. That self-protective action is quite different. I wish I could capture it on video to be able to show you more clearly than I can describe, but for that, iI guess you need a video recording device.

Here's a couple of shots.

In this one his head is way down and he's moving to the edge of the nest. She's behind him, not in an aggressive pose; she's actually greeting him.

Anyone's experiences with similar would be appreciated.

Poor guy....maybe he'll get over it eventually.

Marlton, NJ

LOL, I've never seen that here. That's interesting.

He was surely traumatized poor guy...hope he has a better summer this year. They sure are a beautiful pair!

The Carolina Chickadees are showing back up at the feeders occasionally now.

I miss them during the summer. I will see and hear them in the woods when I am out walking.

A Tufted Titmouse came by too, so you know Fall is just around the corner.

Fall?

waaaaaaaa

Wilmar, AR(Zone 8a)

Hi y'all! It's been awhile since I've been on here...birding has been really slow, but I saw these two ladies (?) in the creek yesterday just splashing around and enjoying their day at the spa. :)

I'm thinking the one on the left is a female Summer Tanager and the one on the right is a female Indigo bunting...am I correct?

Wilmar, AR(Zone 8a)

Oops! I forgot to attach to picture...I told you it had been a long time! LOL

I am SO looking forward to Fall migration...summer has been really boring! I see mostly Cardinals this time of year (and they are not pretty!), Mourning Doves and the occasional Titmouse and Chickadee and bunny rabbits! Still have a few hummingbirds buzzing around too. Hope things pick up soon!

Joshua, TX

Wow Meth! Great shots, look at the talons on that guy! I'd hate to be a fish, or animal and see that coming after me!

Marlton, NJ

Nice ones Teresa and Nanny!

Fall migration has already started for many birds. Down the shore the numbers of Purple Martins and Tree Swallows are really dropping along with many other species.

Clinton, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks Pelletory and Teresa. Margarett I see the action is heating up again on your side of the pond. The pics look good.

Here are few shots: House finch, Dove and Female Cardinal. I just love the Female Cardinal's colors and her mannerism (she's really a lady)

After hiding the first peanut in this Palm tree, he (maybe she), found another one that had already been hidden.

I assumed these are vultures of some kind. Doesn't the pix look errie with the dark sky on the background?
