Daily Pics Vol. 238

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

It is time for a new thread and I am happy to start the new one...here is a link to the previous one http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1026036/ .

I am on the watch for migrating birds but so far not much action so I will share a few of the old stand-bys!

First up is a juvenile Blue Jay...they seem to learn how to make noise the minute they appear on the scene.

The male Cardinals have been busy feeding the young that follow them to the feeders and beg.

The number of American Goldfinches seems to be increasing...here is a male still in breeding plumage. Hard to believe that in a short time all the beautiful yellow feathers will be replaced with their winter plumage.

Nice Start Rose. Do you have lots of sunflowers this year for the goldfinch?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thank you Rose for the new thread, I'm glad you've mentioned about the goldfinches plumage changes with the season, I'll be sure to look for the season to come. Nice pictures, goldfinches are showing up at the feeder here as they're making their way up North.

Burn, love your pics. as always. I'm looking forward for more. Rudy -- is a possibility. ^_^

Thanks Mrs. Ed and Lily!

That's a cute shot Lily...those Goldfinches and their antics have gotten me through the past two long winters.

Mrs. Ed...yes, lots of sunflowers here and the Goldfinches are eating them like crazy!

All I've been seeing are Ruby-throated hummers here in Columbus, Ga. I wonder if I'll ever get any other varieties?

Nice start to the new thread. I have not been seeing as many Goldfinches in my backyard as last year.

Here are a few shots from earlier in the week in a wetland area.

First on the list is a male 'Blue Grosbeak' .

And, lastly, an Osprey. The Osprey, Great Egrets and Little Blue Heron were shot at 850mm. I normally don't shoot at that focal length but things are so slow I just decided to play around. I also saw at least 15 Great Blue Herons but all were out of reach even with that focal length.

Nice start, Rose. Linth, your pics are awesome as usual. Love the Green Heron. Still not many birds here yet. Come October I'll start seeing all the winter birds. Here is an Anhinga flying over.

Great start to the new thread, Rose. As always, your photos are fabulous. I really like the one of the Goldfinch with the sunflower.

Linth, wonderful shots of the Great Egret. What a funny image of the Heron.

GP, I can never get over how large the Anhinga's are in flight. Good inflight shot.

My sister lives in Canberra, on the other side of the country to where I am. We share some birds in common, but we certainly don't have these gorgeous Gang Gang Cockatoos. She said that usually she'll see one or two, but a dozen turned up on her back deck yesterday morning and she quickly took a couple of shots with her mobile phone. Check out the deck railing where it's been chewed at, probably by Sulphur-crested Cockatoos that frequent her place.

The black and white bird along towards the rear of the railing is an Australian Magpie (probably a Black-backed). The magpies we have in Western Australia are named Western Magpies - the adult male has a white "saddle" back and the female has a mostly black back. At the present time, these gorgeous songsters are singing all night long in the lead up to the breeding season.

My sister says they sound like a rusty gate - and I was very impressed by her imitation of the call.

Love those Cockatoos Margaret. Nanny Goldfinches are much welcome here, I saw a few yesterday after a long absence, then no more today. The Mourning Doves are frequent visitors here too. I know neighbors has Blue Birds nests nearby, but I've yet seen one in close up. Nice pix everyone.

Lily, what's a Nanny Goldfinch?

Great shots everyone!

Linth, your shorebirds are wonderful!

Margaret...love the Cockatoos.

GP...love the Anhinga, can't imagine seeing one fly over.

Nanny...nice shots...love the Blues!

We've got Grackles!

Wow, that's a bad case of the Grackles you've got there, Rose.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

LOL..about Nanny Goldfinch!!

VERY BAD shots here, but it shows & Ruby Throated Hummingbird & an Indigo Bunting. I watched these 2 for at least 5 minutes one evening they were so entertaining! Where ever the bunting flew the hummer followed.

Margaret--lovely pictures of the birds; the tree with the yellow blooms was nice as well.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Oooops, Hack, I meant to address the goldfinch with 'Nanny'. Sorry my bad.

Melbourne, FL

Of course, because I was outside this morning WITHOUT my camera, I saw a large bird approaching...and watched as a large Hawk flew right over my head! Too fast to ID.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Please, forgive the fuzzy photo that I captured from video, but I'm so excited to have had this bird, that Resin helped me identify as a Baltimore Oriole, in my bird bath this past Saturday, that I had to share it. The Cardinal was very curious about the Oriole. I haven't seen one around here before, maybe he hadn't either:)
