Few plants are adapted to the habitat in sub-alpine Mauna Loa.

One of them is the Hawaiian Bluebery; Ohelo, Vaccinium reticulatum.

Sounds yummy. The blue berries look so tasty.

I just went and put an end to this guys dinner....ate a big chunk out of my crinum Asiaticum...

Called a Southeastern Lubber...this guy is not the largest we've done in, either.

Here is Vaccinium dentatum a closely related species , known as Ohelo La'au, as it's more astringent fruit is used for medicine.

Jean, that critter looks like a monster!!! How big was it?

Kassy, those frogs are sooo cute! and your grasshopper also. Is that a deer refuge?

Dave, I assume that is an anole. I never thought they were cute until I saw a girl on TV put one to sleep and dress it up in clothes. So funny! I just bet you don't have a TV also.

Does that HI Bluebery have berries? Such amazingly different plants and trees you have growing there.

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

Jean, Keep that thing down there!!!!!!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I agree, keep them! The joke up here was that in Florida they had bugs as big as a cat! Well, my sister-in-law was attacked by one!

Keaau, HI

This is another Ohelo La'au, but gets a couple meters tall; Vaccinium calycinum.
This Vaccinium is usually found in old growth forest; the previous two species are more prevalent in newer habitats.

So pretty.

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

Bugs as big as cats???
I sure hope not because I have a 20 pound cat that is almost 3 feet long when he is stretching out............LOL

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

She was just shy of four inches....and a rare all black one, we have them with green, yellow and/or white markings and combinations of them with black. The largest I have seen was just at 5 inches long....Bleech!

They are nick-named Devil Horses, Wood-Devils, Creosote grasshoppers and Tobacco-Spit grasshoppers

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

The deer are protected at a park by Lake Michigan that we went to.
Keep the rock away from Lynn......LOL

How the heck do you expect us to play keep away with that thing Kassy....grin

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

JUST 4 inches long!!! Very scarry!

I don't see many grasshoppers here. I remember the tobacco- spitting onces as a kid. We would hold them long enough until they spit their tobacco. Now I think that is kind of gross.

Kassy, don't you have 3 cats and we have seen just one? If not I have you mixed up with someone else.

I have seen some awful big cock-roache's in Florida, but they would not stop me from living there;-)

Keep those picture's coming everyone. I am enjoying tham all.

Keaau, HI

More pictures?

Kea and Ku wanna see more too.

I'll try an' see what I can do!

We have huge cockroaches here too....yuk

I have had a very good day Jean and hope you have as well. Enjoyed your rainbow picture...thank's for going outside in the pouring rain to capture it for us all.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Oh, Dave is a rhymer!! I guess Kea and Ku like to read the news!

I just couldn't stand living down there with all those monster bugs. Went camping once in Florida and swimming in the Gulf. The jelly fish really creeped me out!

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

Lake Michigan is in the back ground here.

Yes, venice I have 3. The one you have probably seen is the one that makes the road trips with me up here to my BF's. I'll see if I can dig up a picture of my big guy.
In the mean time, I'll give eveyone a flower or weed to try to figure out what it is.
It was growning in the rocks on Lake Michigan..............I want it!!!

Why are they loading this picture?

You guy's made me hungry all over again after I re-read "slowly" what everyone was fixing for dinner tonight. It was Mexican for me this evening! Got to have it from time to time;-)

Dave, is that a picture of a young Metrosideros seedling?

Keaau, HI

Yes, a young flowering plant!

More native plants on the way!

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

I put in the picture of my big cat because venice asked about my other cats Dave.

Keaau, HI

Old growth 'Ohi'a forest produces a variety of rare plants!
