I was just out to the garden and picked a bunch of beets. But they rather large, but they are not round, they are more like a big fat carrot. I hate to sound like such a beginner, but are they suppose to be like that? I know with potatoes you are suppose to make sure the tops are always covered with dirt, does the same apply to beets?

Do you know what cultivar you planted? The name of the type of beet? If you do, it might help figure out whether they are supposed to be shaped like that or if something else is going on with them.

Concur: There are carrot shaped cultivars and no, beets should not be covered with dirt. They like to grow with thier top part above ground.

Farmerdill, that's basically what they look like. I haven't a clue what cultivar I planted, just picked up a package at the farm store! LOL. I guess I will assume they are what they are suppose to be. Thanks!

That is a cultivar named Cylindra, another is called Formanova. Lots of folks like them for the uniform slices. I don't find them as sweet as some of the turnip shaped beets.
