and a morning glory question...

Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

volunteer morning glories (Scarlet O'Haras mostly) have overtaken a 7 foot Rudebeckia (the kind with chartreuse middles and golden petals)... how do I get the morning glories off this plant (and my Abyssinian Sword Lilies) without destroying the plants I want to save?

Any help you can give would be much appreciated. If I can get the new digital camera to work I will take a picture of the MG's that took over everything!

TIA,

Love in Christ,
Janie

I'd just pull the MG up from the roots and let them die, without disturbing the others' In other words, not try pulling them off or away from the others, too much work'

GREAT idea, Sis, never thought of that. then when they actually die, the tendrils will eventually rot away, right?

I can vouch for pulling the root out of the ground as being effective; did this by accident and tried to replace it, that does NOT work! Vine browned rapidly. My thought is, the frost will get it soon anyway! I innocently asked my Hibiscus breeder friend if a morning glory would be nice climbing on a Hibiscus... she told me fine, if I wanted to choke the life out of the Hibiscus! I thought they were delicate vines, well my 'Milky Way' morning glories almost tore a redwood deck off the house- just two plants covered it! (My first year with these!) Seed anyone? John

I am always amazed at their strength and invasiveness. I still am finding seedlings throughout wherever I pull something out or weed something.

If it were MY doing, I wouldn't feel so mad but these are leftovers from our landlord... :(

In spring, what should I do? I feel like I need to patrol every day for new MG seedlings! Any way to prevent them? I highly doubt it.

Now if you had ONE vine...? And trained it on a trellis all by itself?? I do love the way they look with my cosmos (if I could get the blue ones)...

::sigh::

Janiejoy, sure know how ya feel' It took me 2yrs.constantly mowing them and Round Up to kill some' Just one vine produces hundreds of seeds' I pulled most of mine out 2 weeks ago while still blooming but still I know they'll be back' Welcome to gardening, lol' Hang in there''':D

SO... despite the fact that they are glorious right now, I need to get these puppies OUT before they produce a million seeds for yes, even more Scarlet OHaras~~~!!!

...adding that to my list of things to do, which is growing by leaps and bounds.

Thanks everyone.. :)

I had morning glories last year and they were quite healthy and pretty. Well, come this spring, I had them EVERYWHERE and my neighbors did too. I cannot tell you how many little seedlings I pulled and mowed. NEVER again. Maybe if I had a ton of land and they could ramble along a fence or field but I don't. Good luck Janie. :-)

yep ... whenever anyone anywhere near me suggests they're going to plant morning glories i tell them i will PAY them not to! i've been pulling them out of my teeth for years from neighbors who think they're just swell ... they do have a tendency to run right over the top of everything if you don't stay on top of them ... good luck!

I have a ton of land and the morning glories have tried to
fill every bit of it. They invaded my vegetable garden...
I've lost all joy in them. And talk about reseeding themselves, they tried to take over my compost bin so don't compost morning glory vines,,,big mistake. Oh well, I'll keep pulling.

beware! beware! of the dangerous charm and deceitful innocence of the morning glory! lol

I had planted annuals. They are the plant that keeps on giving. :-/ Maybe in a colder climate they would not be as bad but from what I am reading, it doesn't matter. Ree

Oh well, that's what DH loves, and that's what he's going to get for his patriotic vine coverage.....only he gets to move, pull, whatever the seedlings.

Okay group, I'm in the process of getting that place with the long fence away fron anything except some pine trees. So, if you have any of those seeds, send them on, esp the Scarlett O'Hara, don't have those yet. Karenmarie, I also won't have any neighbors. I have grown in past, where we live now and they do spread themselves around. Pam
