Hi Nily, best time to dig up and pot the transplants are at the end of season when the weather is a bit cooler, depending on the size of the plants you are trying to transplant, I would dig them up carefully, divide them up, you will find within the clump you dig out, separate stems with roots attached, gently tug them apart, cut of some top foliage so the plants dont struggle with evaporation at this stage, pop the little plant-lets into new potting compost in pots and water well, keep them either indoors or in a very sheltered area over winter, come early spring you can replant them out in your / friends garden where they will stat to regrow and bloom, probable not lots of flower the first year, but will form larger clumps there after each new season,

Save some of the dried seed heads as they turn brown and papery looking, carefully crack or cut the dried seed head open and sprinckle the very tiny seeds (like grains of sand) over some compost, dont cover the seed as they need light to germinate, you will See the green shoots within about 6 weeks, when large enough to handle, pot up the tiny little seedlings for planting out next spring, keep watered while they grow, a window ledge is good for this type of propogation and you will have fun watching your new plants for free. best wishes and good luck. Sorry I didn't think to do that in the first place!

WeeNel, THANKS for the advice!
I will try to follow it as best I can. I KNOW I can accomplish the seed part, so I'll be able to count on that as a backup if my digging attempts fail!

BTW, you said, "...the clump you dig out..." and I'm not finding real "clumps"! Just a bunch of roots I can't even find the bottom of! I even set one aside for a moment and then couldn't tell top from bottom on it! But back I go this week to try again, thanks to your help!

I think seeds are the best bet also.
I've read in MANY places that OPs do not like to be disturbed.
