I planted squash and I lost the packet so I dont remember what I planted. Could someone please look at the picture and tell me what it is (this one is 14 inches long) and when I should be picking it?
Please Help not sure what i have
Hi there - beautiful squash! It is a yellow summer squash. Yours is the straightneck variety. 14" is pretty big for a summer squash, but they are tasty as long as they are over about 9". I say pick them when they are at least 11".
Here is some more information about them: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/hil/hil-24-a.html
Incidentally, I picked 9 of these big boys from my garden this morning. I gave 6 away and made the other three for dinner. A nice way to cook them is to slice them into 1/8" discs and saute with olive oil, tomatoes, salt, and a pinch of sugar. Cook them until they are soft and falling apart (probably about 20 minutes).
You've got some lovely squash. I hope you enjoy it!
Thank you very much that is what I was thinking someone told me i should pick them when they are small and I didnt think that was right
I don't like summer squash if they are over about 8 inches. I like to pick them small. Once they get big the seeds inside become tougher. Guess it is just a matter of taste. Try some both ways and decide how big you like them. Gardening is learning what you like, what works for you, what your tastes are. There is little you can actually do wrong if you learn from what you did. My summer squash will occasionally get away from me and grow too big and I just dump them into the compost since I don't like them big. All your choice!
