Hi, we purchased these beautiful two plants this summer for our patio. The rhondondren was in bloom and is ready to bloom again. The rose tree has bloomed continously. What is the best winter care for them?
Winter care for rose tree, rhododendron
Not sure about winter care (since we don't really have winter down here), but I would deadhead those spent roses to promote more blooms. The pic makes it look like they're still on the stem pedal-less.
Both your Rose and Rhododendron will require indoor winter protection IF your area in Canada has ground freeze,
Rhododendrons very rarely flower twice in the one year, however there are occasions where a shrub will send out a late bloom, usually when there has been poor flowering the year before and then a good wet spring follows, All Rhododendrons are best dead headed soon as the flowers fade, you must make sure when y dead head that you ONLY remove the faded bloom though as these shrubs actually start to grow the next years new leaf and flower buds, so till you know what you are looking at, go easy, I find the best way is to hold the dead flower between thumb and index finger and just gently snap the dead flower off, you will then see the new growth buds (tiny) once the flower head is removed, give the plant a good feed of acidic plant food specially for Azaleas and Rhododendrons so they get some nutrients as they begin to grow next seasons flower buds and foliage, keep well watered but not soaking wet, a mulch of leaf mould will help over winter. IF you dont have ground freeze then place the pot in a very sheltered area where good light and no frost can damage the foliage, they are evergreen plants.
Your rose must be dead headed all season to help keep the flowers coming, because it i in a pot, I would give it a liquid ROSE feed maybe every month as this type of rose uses up a lot of energy making new blooms all summer, water well too as they dry out very fast in pots and tubs. dead heading prevents your plants using energy for seed production, maybe the end of the autumn you can leave the dead flowers on the shrub IF you want the red coloured hips, but to be honest, your type of Rose are grown for the beauty of the flowers and foliage rather than the hips. Again depending on your winter climate, you may need to take the rose in doors also, My sister-in-law who is a master gardener and lives in Canada (North Ontario) cant grow the plants you have outside in the flowerbeds as her winters are too long and cold, so I would say perhaps you need to take winter protective action for your plants too, be a shame to loose them after caring for them all summer.
Hope this helps you out a bit. take care and happy gardening. WeeNel.
