Corkscrew hazel which looks dead

Halifax, NS, Canada

I planted a corkscrew hazel 2 years ago, (about 3 feet high) and it seemed to do well; although the leaves looked unusual and as if they were dying, I knew the plant was healthy. However, this Spring and summer we have had much rain and the hazel does not look healthy; the leaves are smaller and even more withered. What can I do to help it? It really looks as if it is dying.

Polly, the cork screw hazel you have does have peculiar NEW leaves, but as the leaves mature, they look just normal like most other trees, they normally take a couple of years to settle into their new situation and in early spring, they have lovely cat-kins before the leaves arrive, over here, we call them the walking stick Hazel as when the trees grow larger, the branches are all twisted and curly, like an old mans walking stick. the tree is very attractive in spring and summer, loose all leaf in winter and the branches look so unusual when leafless, mine grows best in slightly acidic soil beside my Rhododendrons so maybe a very small handfull of acidic plant food sprinkled around the root area and forked into the top soil could help a bit, the best way to check IF your tree is dying on you is to scrape away a tiny bit of bark, say close to the tip of a branch, if the inside of the scrape looks god and healthy, then your tree is fine, if it looks dead or brown then the tree is suffering in some way and you would need to further investigate what the problems are, but I would say dont give p on it just yet, trees normally take a few years to settle in and put on new growth, hope this helps you out a bit, good luck. Thanks Weenel for your advice. I shall do exactly as you suggest.
