What kind of tiller do you use ?

We're thinking of buying a bigger tiller than the little Mantis one that I've been using.

Any recommendations / suggestions ?

Many thanks...

Buy a good rear tine tiller. My old one is an MTD and I like it better than some of the more expensive models. Try to find one that you can reverse the way the tines turn. A big help if you need to till an area that is hard. The tines pull against the motion of the wheels and hold it to the ground. Keeps it from jumping. How did you like your Mantis? I just bought one to work my raised beds. That shovel handle got next to me.

Hi Jim,

I love the Mantis...works GREAT in the raised beds...and in my general landscaping beds too. My new vege garden that I put in is just too big for the Mantis. I used it this last Spring and I about killed myself working all day on it....it's just too small. I'll use the Mantis for in-between the vege rows on the big garden...and still use it on all my other small projects.

I like my mantis, too, what little I have used it. Big jobs call for big tillers. I'm fixing to take to tomatoe cages out of one bed and will get to see how well it works in them. I know it will beat that shove. Hope you find the tiller you need.

I like my Mantis but I admit it wouldn't be enough to handle a larger garden.

When I lived in South Florida, I had a Troy Bilt 8 hp, but when we moved it was too big to bring with us, so we gave it to a friend. It did a great job and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Two years ago, I purchased a Mantis tiller because the adv. said it would work on clay soil - well the darn thing, skipped across the ground and nearly vibrated me to death. After 15 minutes I put it into the back of the garage in disgust and as far as I know it's still there!

So why didn't I buy another Troy Bilt? Hubby is 77 and I'm 65 - the Troy Bilt is one heavy machine!

Incidentally, we own a Troy Bilt lawn mower and it does a great job - not a single problem in three years.
