too bad... sorry to hear it Andy
Edibles - '09 - Part 4
That's the one, Pixie. It didn't look that good this spring with sparse blooms, then nothing.
I have to snap a pic for old times sake.
Celeste, that squash looks like a round watermelon
Dnut, we'll have a moment of silence for your pea plant.
So sorry about your mountain laurel, Andy, it was a beauty.
Andy that is truly sad. I fear that my green ash is near the end of its life too :( I keep putting off having the arborist look at it cuz I don't want to hear the verdict.
Pixie, I've seen cream-colored peppers, so you've probably got one! Andy, sorry about the Mt. Laurel---my airedale dug up my new one, pulled away the little fence I had put around it! He couldn't have dug up a cheap plant---oh, no. D-nut, ashes are short-lived---we've lost 2 since we built this house, our neighbor lost their's as well.
D'nut, Green ash are in trouble around here. Some bug is getting into them plus the yearly stripping by the Winter moths. My neighbor took down 3 huge ones last fall, the other 5 will come down this winter. All were over 50 years old providing abundant shade. Darn shame.
Andy P
Emerald ash borer - they're a horror.
Yep--I loved the ash next door as it provided us with some privacy----but now that my veggie garden is there, I have the sun instead---when it shines here, which hasn't been too often this summer! Sherrie, good luck with the beets---I love them, too. This year I grew some goldens to roast.
I just noticed I had some too!
The hornworms are so exotic looking---but the melons look better!
Sherrie, what salsa recipe do you use? I made a big batch yesterday but ut came out too wet ... . maybe I can save it.
I don't have the ash borer (knocking on my head for good luck as I type) but I do have the leaf rollers in abundance. A hard spray with icy water in the spring just when the leaves bud out and with the help of my army of baldfaced hornets, those critters are kept in check.
Woo hoo!!!
Roma tomatoe work the best for salsa as they are meaty. If you are using other tomatoes as you dice them put them in a strainer or they will come out wet. Try straining it but save a little liquid so you can adjust it.
I am convinced on doing beets now. You have the beet greens and then you have beets.
Melon & pumpkin look great---I bought a cantaloupe at a farm stand yesterday, but not too much flavor---the melons I liked were the Hand melons from around Saratoga----we used to get them when we went to see our friend from NH race his trotters & pacers.
Sherrie, I wish I had read your post before I made the salsa. i just hate to throw away anything I grew! Even juice! Maybe we'll use the garlicky, not hot enough too wet salsa and add it to spaghetti sauce tonight, some if it at least. I'm not sure what kind of tomatoes mine are ... Early Girl, or Abraham Lincoln, maybe.
It seem like no matter what you do, nothing comes out the same 2 times in a row. Ya gotta get the feel and adjust.
I am convinced on BEETS - you get the greens and then you get the beets. I have all ready canned 14 pints. Now I have these suckers as I have washed them 5 times! Looking at another 14 pints.
Nice! I love beets.
yum!
I love beets too - pickled, with butter, plain, whatever, yum yum.
Try them roasted!
Nice haul!
I made pickled beet salad tonight for dinner---and here is a carrot I dug today---too bad nothing else grew in the garden---I can honestly say planting a veggie garden this year was not worth the trouble---I would have done better at the farmers' markets. That's a quarter on top of the carrot for size comparison.
I tried doing a lot in containers I kept all over - trying to guilt DH into making a veggie garden. Anyway, not much did well, and I have carrots that didn't even grow 2" long. Tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, peas and green beans did well in containers.
nice celeste
Oooh, Pixie---what nice produce! Your garden was definitly worth it.
