Edibles - '09 - Part 4

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Ha ha ha. I am thinking of writing a DG article about Late Blight (did I say that already?). For readers in other parts of the country, so they can feel your pain.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Marilyn - pretty purples!! How did they taste?

Jen - pretty pics!

Bill - beautiful lush garden!

Willie - that casserole looks so good!!! I'm hungry now, dang it!
Good tip on your bulb food. I just tried using it around my caladiums to give them a jolt. I have no clue if that will be good for them. What do you think?

Strange - this year we didn't have one single grape on our Concord vines. Someone else who lives close had the same problem. Hank thinks an early cold snap may have been the culprit. No grape jelly this year.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Casserole was very tasty, and already thinking about a Chicken Greek Souvlaki version!

Bone meal has a high middle number as fertilizer .....

The middle number (P) is good for promoting flowering?? I think, which is what the peppers want to encourage a lot of fruit formation.

As I understand it,

Quoting:
Phosphorus is important in plant bioenergetics. As a component of ATP, phosphorus is needed for the conversion of light energy to chemical energy (ATP) during photosynthesis. Phosphorus can also be used to modify the activity of various enzymes by phosphorylation, and can be used for cell signalling. Since ATP can be used for the biosynthesis of many plant biomolecules, phosphorus is important for plant growth and flower/seed formation.

i am in a crisis situation here - only have a couple spears of dill pickles left - probably should have waited longer because of the waste in cider and pickling spices - went ahead and canned two jars of dills yesterday, need many more to last a year - hoping this gets the cukes growing!!

t's are finally starting to turn and we are picking a few per day now - should have some huge canning sessions soon - my back aches just thinking about standing over the sink and de-seeding the t by hand - not big on the hand crank tool and we have a good one - we prefer to can just the meat of the t's and make sauce later.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

My tomatoes are finally turning. It's been so hot that I think my cukes are done. I'll harvest what I have. The peppers are coming too.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Here's a shot of this morning's meager harvest. Cukes are coming in slowly; my first patch of green beans is about finished and hopefully the second patch will be producing soon. The onions are beefing up and the Tumbling Tommy is still giving us the cherries....

Willie - thanks for the info on the phosphorous. In Fla. you aren't supposed to use fertilizer with a high middle number because the soil naturally has so much in it. I'm not sure that's the same deal up here. I really should get a good soil tester.

Yummy, yummy.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I like that kind of edible Jen!!

going to have to stop by and steal some berries Memory!!!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Great news, AYC! Deep dish blackberry pie was my dad's favorite - even with all the seeds. He just took out his teeth at the table to swish with water. :) Not a pretty sight!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

OMG! Parents never stop being an embarassment to their children, do they? LOL I have lots of volunteer blackberry bushes if anyone wants them. The cultivar is thornless and semi-erect and the berries are HUGE!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

That is the JOB of a good set of parents, Cat! To embarrass their children at all the right moments.

Yes and it happens to Adults also.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Memory - Hank and I would love a couple of your volunteers if you are still planning to come to our RU. We lost all of our bushes last winter for some reason. I do miss those fresh blackberries! With or without your volunteers, I'm sure hoping you're planning to come!!
Louise

I am and I will bring Blackberries.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

YAY!!!!!!!!!

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

Harvested tomatoes and cukes yesterday. I have only about 4 cukes. The plants are drying up now.

Thomaston, CT

No one picked the veggies for the 4 days I was gone---don't even want to look! The purple beans were delicious, Louise---much better than the green this year---also, went to the Farmer's Market in Pittsford, & bought 2 pints of huge blackberries, & some tart yellow apples. Oh, yes---lovely peaches, too.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Memory - I'm so glad you are coming! I'll put you down on the other thread to bring the Blackberry bushes. That's terrific! You can sure put my name on a couple! Yippee!!!

Those look great, Bill! You don't seem to be behind in the growing season at all, as we are here. My tomatoes and peppers aren't close to being ripe.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thx louise - not really peppers and eggplant only have flowers so far

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

My peppers are just now flowering too. I do have one mini Banana Pepper. lol

My tomatoes are ripening, but no yellow squash yet---how weird is that?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

nice looking stuff Bill... I have one out of 5 pumpkins we planted that look promising.. I see a few babies forming!!!... finally we got one right!!

Thomaston, CT

Hope they have time to mature.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Cat, the pears look good. My semi-dwarf Seckle pear has been slow to produce for 8 years. It's loaded now. I was worried the branches would break and one did today. I hate thinning, lol.
Pixie, peppers are coming along well with the heat. I've picked a few bells already.
The blackberries are in full swing, one or two quarts a day. Ever wonder what the inside looks like?

Mmmmm blackberries! Those look tasty!!!

Business has had me working from rise to sleep the past two weeks! Woo Hoo!! But, alas, that leaves no time for photos and fun, like chattin' it up with all y'all!

The leek bed looks great, Bill! Makes me taste and smell my potato leek soup a brewing! But, WAY too early to think about making soups, just yet!

I harvested about 50 or 60 pounds of tomatoes, so far! Yippie! I am so lucky to have been spared the hardship so many have faced this year.

My zucchini and squash, on the other hand, have gone to mildew. I have cut the worst leaves off, and things are still growing, so I have hope there that not all is lost. I have picked probably 50 - 60 pounds of zucchini. Maybe 10 or 15 pounds of yellow gooseneck squash.

The eggplant have been great! Both the Viserba and the Lavender Touch. Probably 15 or 20 eggplants picked, so far, and twice that coming ripe.

The Tollie's Red Sweet Peppers are starting to turn red now, and soon I will have many to pick. The Satan's Kiss (Piccante Calabrese) Hot Pepper has yet to start turning red, but they are late to turn, I hear.

Made picante salsa out of about half the tomatoes and some of the cilantro I picked today. Made almost a gallon of the stuff, I betcha!

Hope everyone is happy and healthy!

Here's a shot of a new recipe I tried. A good, rich breakfast meal.

Baked Eggplant and Zucchini and Parmigiana Tortino

The missing ingredient in the batter part of the recipe is heavy cream.

me too Robin... this is our second year trying them... last year we ended up with one as big as the babies are now.. and that's it.. the vine was huge and no pumpkins

neat photo Andy

glad to hear your plants are doing well Willie

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

One of the branches on my Asian pear did break a few weeks ago. I need to thin the pears out more than I did. That tree has 3 kinds grafted on to it and so far I've tasted only one kind. It was kind of bland - but maybe it wasn't quite ripe.

All I got left growing is peppers. Jalapeno, Green Bell, Sweet Bananna, Hot Cherry and the dreaded Bhut Jolika.
