lol. Robin is sneaky!!! how did I become in charge of creating the new threads...ROTFL... see... sneaky!

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

ok.. working on the rules for the brug competition? marathon? growathon? relay? what the heck IS this we are doing?

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

ok.. here is my initial attempt;

each person wanting to participate, must pay their portion of the seeds. they also have to donate either seeds or small plants to be used as the prize at the end. we will name a deadline for people to enter. once the deadline hits, and all payment for seed have been made, mekos will then mail out everyones seed at the same time (Mekos need not donate seed or plant as she is taking care of sending the seed)

once each has recieved their envy each must post that they received it that day.. the ticker starts the moment you receive your envy.. so no cheating. the first person to post a pic of their brug (must be labeled in the photo.. again, honor system here, so no cheating) seed sprouting wins the combined seed/plant donations and everyone else will mail their plant/seed to the winner.

hows that?

ok. so we an limit the number of participants by the number of seed. its my opinion that each participant receive at least 2 seeds... that limits the number to 15 participants... we can limit it more if need be is up to all of you

Sounds great! We want a blooming white Brug to be the winner and we need a few seeds each so we can get a good one. Each person posts what they will donate to the winner. It's one thing to sprout a Brug but we want to grow and bloom it out. That way we use all our skills. What ya think?

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

it takes a good long while to gro a brug to bloom tho.. we wanna wait that long?

Thinking alike I see. I want mine to look like that pic. Thanks for starting the new threads. Yes Arejay has wonderful leadership qualities. LOL

Well we can set a certain size for it. Beyond a sprout or by the end of Sept maybe.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

isnt that a beautiful pic??? I dont know how the grower got it to grow so darn straight, but wish i could!

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

well, we could say by October 1st, whoever has the most bloms? iof no one has a bloom by October1, then we will go by who has the tallest.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

and we could linit participants to 6.. that way everyone gets 5 seed each?

I think they would take longer to bloom but we could submit our pics and let someone who's not participating choose the best plant. Or show our pics with a yard stick maybe.

I'm for the five seeds each and will donate a pack or 5 so everyone can participate who wants to.

Editing to say: Mekos can probably get more if we need them.

I just NOW found this new thread! SNEAKY, yes sneaky. But in my absence, I managed to order 30 seeds of the white double angel trumpet AND I found another site that had BLUE egyption sacred water Lotus and yes, I ordered some seed, but didn't stop there, no that would have been the right sensible thing to do, no I ordered a mixed package of different colored water lotus. I'm gonna be eating tomatoe sandwiches for quite a while now. Oh Man!!! I just couldn't resist. Well, ya know when they come, I'll have to (you thought I was gonna say Share), hehehe, AUCTION some off, and share with my friends. Good night all. Tomorrow comes early.

Hi Everyone,
Mindy it was Serays seeds that arrived....See you have all been busy again with some new ideas. You are a creative bunch....
Leadership skills you say Cue , Thank You. I used to tell employees that, right after I would start them on a project and wander off when they were busy with whatever we had started to do what I did.....
I have a question about your little Brug game....this is August the seeds are just now being bought right? so in Oct we are planning to show blossoms?
Hmm are we all moving to like Australia?
Can the garden be on the windowsill in the house?
On a bench in the greenhouse?
I could have snow by October.
I know I sometimes have a little trouble with dates and such but I think I am on point with this one....Am I?

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

If anyone sees partyArty...would you ask him if he got his newbie package??? Are you there party Arty?

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Bluffles I have your envie it will be a bit waiting for the things you are wanting.....will be here soon...

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Good morning everyone. Shopping trip was canceled due to a death in friend's church which does a dinner for family members so friend is busy cooking. It's been rescheduled for Monday.
Mekos sounds good to me. Cue rules sound good but I'm like Robin on the bloom date. We get our first hard frost in October so that means the weather will be cooling down between next weekend and then. We are currently in our hottest season of the year for the rest of this week and next.
Robin you should get the seeds I sent any day now.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

arejay - i had made that same point earlier. while i m in FL and our cool winter doesnt officially start till... January, i can grow brugs through the 'technical' fall, but some of you may experience the cold weather starting in october.

that being said, i do know those in northern climates that start seed indoors int he fall.. so yes, it can be done. This is why the contest would only go until october 1, and if someone manages to get a bloom, great, they win, if not, then it wold go by biggest plant grown by oct. 1.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

ok ladies.. dont forget, that brugs actually LIKE cooler (not cold) weather, so some of you may experience far more growth than us here in the hot south. brugs FLOWER in cooler temps.. versus hotter temps.. like we are experiencing here n FL.. so it can in fact be done! its just that those of you in the upper parts of the US will have to grow yours indoors in windowsills and sunny areas of the house, where as I can actually leave mine on the patio until later.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

ok Seray, we are going to have to rethink this contest a bit... here is why

brugs take a longer amount of time to sprout from seed - as much as 6 weeks in some cases. even if we all get seed next week, and manage to sprout in in record time, there is almost NO chance of getting one to grow big enough to form the 'Y' that will lead to producing blooms. Actually, we would all be lucky if that 'Y' had formed by the end of next Spring. So... my suggestion is is back tot he sprouts... or who can get theirs to reach 1 FT tall first.. that way there is no deadline.. and whoever grows the 12" brug first will win.

ya'll lemme know what ya think.

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Now that's what I'm talkin about right there.....Yeay ...

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Sounds more reasonable to me.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Mindy.. gonna get your moonbush out in the mail today.. but first, I must have my coffee before i start diggin up plants...LOL... also have a package to mail out to blondie as well.. so.. lots of digging gonna happen here this morning

This message was edited Aug 7, 2009 11:39 AM

Sounds ok to me too. Strong healthy 1' plants by Oct. That way we'll all have gorgeous blooming Brugs next summer. LOL

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Mindy, your moonbush is now in the mail and on its way to you!.

when you get it let me know. also, remove from bubble envy carefully. its still in its original peat pellet disk.. so all you should need to do is plant and water and wait for bloom :)

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

HI Everyone
Thank you so much Cue I was just getting ready to let you know the milkweed seeds were waiting at the PO when I went today.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

hopefully, the moonbush will make it... its in a bubble envy thats been lined with cardstock, so hopefully, it survives. I was careful to soak newspaper strips in a diluted fertilizing solution, wrapped around root ball, then covered with plastic wrap. keeping my fingers crossed it will be alright.

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

It will arrive in good shape I'm sure with that method that's how the garden phlox was done almost and it came in still damp and not a sign of wilt anywhere.

I will let you all know as soon as the seeds get here and then everyone can send me address info for sending theirs to them. I have little tripple yellow, and tripple purple/white all about 3 inches tall. When seeds gey here, if ya like, I'll try to send a plant to you guys with the seed. Ya just can't have my red/yellow ones. I have a discovery I have to tell you about. About 5-6 years ago I planted a double purple/white and it came back each year for 3 years. The last 2 years, it didn't and I couldn't find my saved seed so never replanted. They were next to my pond, and the only ones I have ever had there. Today I was out working and found 2 tiny plants about 1-2 inch tall came up volunteer. Those seeds had to lay in the ground for 2 1/2 years to have sprouted now. They are in a totally different area from where I have my other seeds. I plant seeds in the screen room so no birds or creatures can get to them. These little ones are out side between the ponds, up on a hill, where the first I ever had was planted. My gold pink, and white ones were in the front at the road area and never make seed pods, only found seed pods on the purple/white one. Now is that strange or what?

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

mekos.. do you mean triple yellow brugs?
