Storing garlic and tulip bulbs?

Wethersfield, CT

How do I store this years garlic crop to last until next years crop is ready? Lets say a year. Can they be frozen? Also, I received some tulip bulbs from a friend. How do I store them until the fall?

Store them in a cool dry place. I store mine in my extra fridge. Goodluck!

I keep reading that you shouldn't store them in the refrigerator. I think it has something to do with air circulation but I could be wrong.

Hmmm. Mine does get used and I do keep baking soda in it (to keep it dry) and have never had a problem storing bulbs. But for every do there is a dont.. I guess its all a matter of opinion ^_^

I think putting baking soda in the fridge is a great idea. Everything I have read about storing bulbs in the refrigerator never said anything about using baking soda. Do you put the container anywhere in the fridge or in the same place as the garlic?

Hi Davdon! I'm not sure about the garlic but you can plant the tulips now and they'll do fine. I've done that severaly times with bulbs and they always come up great in the spring.

I can't speak for garlic, but for tulips what I've read is if you store them in the fridge the thing you have to be careful of is to not have fruits around like apples that give off ethylene gas as they ripen. Other than that the fridge is fine (and very helpful for people in warmer climates who don't get enough winter chill naturally).

I just place the baking soda on the shelf (we use the fridge for drinks) and the bulbs in a box next to it. Yeah I think I read somewhere about not having fruits nearby.

Come to think of it, I've heard the same thing about the fruit and bulbs. I think I'll just plant them and see what happens.

Let me also just say that I think this is a great site. This is deffinetly my go-to site for garden questions. You guys and gals are great.

I killed the germination on three hundred tulip bulbs one year because I didn't know about the fruit. Hard way to learn.

wow jim, sorry to hear. But i guess sometimes we have to learn the hard way ;)

My dad always said that experience was a dear lesson and a dang fool couldn't learn anyouther way. Hmmm! Wonder if he had me in mind when he said that.

Where I live we have to take tulips up every year and dry them, then refrigerate before planting. We don't have enough cold weather to leave them in the ground. They won't bloom right. Lot of work. We finally just decided to quit raising them. They are one of my favorite flowers.

One year I planted about 100 new bulbs I had ordered from Holland during Thanksgiving vacation. The next day I passed by the bed and noticed little holes everywhere I had planted a bulb. A squirrel had dug everyone of them up and stored them somewhere. Never have found his cashe. He didn't get a chance to eat them though.
