Phoebe,
If it grows straight there.......I'm gonna' get me some........ LOL. That's the only part of my body, except maybe my ears, toes and nose that isn't big as a house!!
Geez Louise,I thought I taught my son...
I swear, Lynn!
Well darn,if those betty crocker's are going to help in that dept.I'll start buying by the case, cause I got left out of that dept, know what I mean.LOL ^_^
Hi Jan,I didn't see any boxes that had 2 in it.The one I got,the little bowl is about 5-6 inches across, cinnamon swirl or something like that, you mean there's others? Whoo hoo ^_^
Smile.......
yep--you get 2 smaller bowls in a package--perfect for little mini's. I think they are actually called Mini Warn Delights. Of course you have to eat them both at once to reap The most beneficial side effects. ;-)
Does anyone use any really unusual/weird containers? Like an old sock or something? I am kidding about the sock but I wonder what things that we normally would not consider might be used?

I read on the pepper forum (in the spring) of someone using egg cartons for seed starting. A similar use might be for leaf starting? Wash container well, Poke holes in the "eggs", fill with starting medium of choice, place leaf...
I recycle almost every container that has smooth surface and can be washed well. I also used for seed starting (and now I have a few mini AV leaves put down for babies) Colada cups. For the Floridians, or for the coffee fanatics that drank at least once in their lives a shot of Cuban Coffee, it might ring a bell faster.
Colada (the Cuban equivalent of espresso) is given in a (plastic) cup to share with others, as it's believed one single person cannot drink that stuff by him/herself (which is untrue, btw...). So, along with the Colada cup, the also give you some thimble plastic cups, about 1 in in diameter and height. I used to drink a whole Colada by myself, so ended up with several such thimbles. Easy to poke holes to it. Check it out!
Those are very cute little thimble cups. Delmonte also has these clearish grapefruit sections cups that I have started using. I think I will be able to see the roots through those.

I can't believe I missed this thread! I love recycling! When I grew AV's and rooted leaves I used to save the little Del Monte Applesauce cups, they are perfect for rooting and I love the clear plastic so you can see the roots form and grow. MMMM ... those Betty Crocker Warm Delights desserts are sooo good and the containers are great for plant use. I love the Cinnamon Swirl Cake and the Chocolate Caramel Cake! There was a time when I ate too many of those, the pounds go right to my middle!
I've also been known to use the microwave dinner "bowls" as plant saucers, and I agree, they are shallow enough that they would be good for certain plants too.
Love those little "Thimble" Cups. I've never seen those before ... where do you find them? I've had Cuban coffee a few times over the years but the only Colada I've heard of is Pina Colada! ^_^ Many years ago my dad had an espresso machine and would make espresso ... too strong for my taste but he drank it every day. I really liked when he made Cafe con Leche if he put a lot of cream in it but the coffee was so strong, I had to have lots of extra leche (cream).
I think these little plastic buchito cups would be good for mini plants or rooting leaves: http://www.cubanfoodmarket.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Category_Code=140080&Product_Code=PLAST200&Screen=CUBANPARTY_PROD&Store_Code=CFM
I love the shallow bulb pans and joined in a co-op last fall where I got some of these: http://www.novoselenterprises.com/products/single.asp?ID=484618 I wish I had ordered a bunch more because I really like the shallow depth, great for so many plants.
I buy kitty litter in those huge containers too and they end up going in the recycling bin because I can never think of what to do with them. I wish I could draw/paint because they would be great for holding potting soil, bird seed and other stuff if they were prettied up! My husband gets his salt for the aquarium in big 5 gal tubs like that too and I use one for mixing fertilizer and water and another for potting soil. They would just look so much nicer if they were decorated with pretty pictures or something, LOL!
Isn't it Jan who does the pretty painting on the little yogurt cups? I think I remember seeing pictures awhile back and they were just such cute little planter pots after she painted and decorated them! I have no artistic talent whatsoever ... I even seem to botch stencils!
I recycle old wooden spoons too .. when they get worn and ugly looking from too much kitchen use, I use them for plants. I've used them for digging in the soil and also as stakes to hold up floppy stems. In this month's issue of Birds & Blooms magazine it showed someone who used old wooden spoons as plant markers in the garden. She painted them and drew funny faces on the bowl of the spoon, used a permanent marker to write the name of the plant and sprayed them with a clear coat finish. What a cute idea!
I paint stuff like that, Linn. I will paint little rose buds and stuff on terra cotta pots. I also take tiny pots, paint them and make wind chimes out of them.
Connie
How cool ... I'd love to see some pic's of your wind chimes! My sister gave me a wind chime a few years ago that has little flower pots and hand tools (trowel, fork etc. hanging from it) ... real cute.
I bought some teeny terra cotta pots years ago that I was thinking of making something out of ... and never got very far, LOL. Some got broken along the way but I think I still have three or four little ones sitting on a shelf on the deck. Once I saw some small colorful hand tools (trowel, fork) for kids that I was going to buy and use for chimes, but never did. I remember a craft show once where someone made chimes using old silver cutlery (forks & spoons) that were really cute.
Some folks are just so talented and crafty! I get ideas sometimes but have a short attention span! ^_^
I will try to find a pic that will scan. I need to make more of them. I had ours hanging at the edge of our carport and a bad storm came through. It got knocked down and broke a couple that I need to replace. It was the first one I made so hubby took a pic of it. The pots were about 1 - 1 1/2 inches tall. I painted the pots teal a color and painted burgandy/pink rose buds on them.
Connie
Hey Linn,
You could always just spray paint the kitty litter buckets and then cut out flowers or something from a magazine and stick it on there or use big decals or something. I think I am going to try something like that for mine since I can't paint either:)
Pat
Pat, Great idea! I took an old bowling ball and made a lawn ornament - covered it with flower pic's from magazines and sprayed it with clear coat. I might just have to do that with some of the kitty litter buckets!
How cute! That sign is adorable...and I agree with it lol
That one's cute too.
I will try to get some pics tomorrow and let you see them, Lin. I hope I can scan the wind chimes. I use the D.D. technique and if you have heard of her, you will kind of know what they will look like.
DD technique? LOL, I don't have a clue what that means. Look forward to seeing your pictures.
Now that takes the cake! Nothing could have said it better. That is why I love my plants so much! Donna Dewberry technique. You dip the brush into 2 different colors and you instantly have variegation it the color. I haven't painted in a while and I need to get back into it. I am wanting to make some Christmas presents for a few here on DG.
Gee .. I wish I could paint! ^_^ I was never even good at the paint by number thing as a kid! Was never real good at coloring within the lines either, no matter how hard I tried, LOL. I jut have no talent! (Or, to be truthful, maybe it's patience that I lack, LOL.) My youngest sister is the one who got all the talent in the family. She used to do ceramics and she did some lovely paintings, she's athletic as well. Out of six kids in the family she is the most creative. Only thing I ended up with was a semi-green thumb!
Now you are making me want to pull out my paints tonight. I paint EVERYTHING! People love hand painted stuff. I did ceramics growing up but I was NO athlete lol
DD means Donna Dewberry, or Onestroke. I do alot of that too. I also do (or rather try to do)landscapes.
Aspen, I think that every pot I have I have painted something on. I just can't stand a plain pot. I posted this picture earlier about my daughters chihuahua. You can't see it very well but this is one pot that I painted.
Isn't that fun to do? The possibilities are endless. I also have the glass paint. I have been so busy since mom died and haven't picked up the paint brush in 3 years. I need to get back into it again. We are remodeling the house we are in now and our "stuff" has been left at our other house until we finish. I need to go try to find some things that I painted so Lin can see them and try to find the pic of the wind chimes. It is raining pretty hard right now. Can't complain though as we need the rain.
Connie
I just love to paint .......anything. It really looks like Donna Dewberry lives at my house!! It's everywhere.
This was $1, it's a font, you can put holy water in the "bowl" at the bottom, not that I will. It says made in italy on the back, its not plastic, but some kind of composite material, guess it is supposed to look like marble. I have alot of blessed Mother stuff, can't pass it up.
And last, wow I am really gettting off topic here, but this thread IS about recycling, right? This is one of those "The Sac" bags, can you believe $5 and never used, it still had tags on it!!! Well, it was originally $10 but the purses were all half price...
I also have a "cross wall", Gail, but the batteries are dead in my camera, will have to get pics of that later. I love yours!
Wow, what great finds! I love thrift stores and flea markets. Years ago my best friend and I cleaned out our houses and hauled everything to the flea market and rented a booth for the day ... she spent the entire time selling our stuff and I spent almost the entire day going around buying more junk! LOL
Oh, that Blessed Mother statue would make a nice garden wall ornament.
Connie, I hope you will post the picture of your wind chimes here too! I'm sure Jannich won't mind us hijacking her thread for awhile. If this thread gets too long we can always start a new one when Jan gets back!
I've been out in the yard taking more pic's of flowers and plants. This is a Tecoma stans I got in trade from Gessiegail a year or so ago. It's in a hanging basket, still haven't planted it in the ground yet .. eventually it will get planted in the yard so it can grow to a nice big size! I love yellow flowers.
Ok, back to recycling! I just remembered that Jannich began this thread about recycling. I will post my flower photo's on the OT/Off Topic thread a little later.
This is a recycle project I saw on the DG craft forum a couple of years ago and thought it was so cool. Some of the ladies made some wonderful creations, covering bowling balls with flower pictures, mosaic tile, pennies, colored marbles, cut glass, mirror chips. They were really beautiful and I had to try it. My friend's son in law gave me an old bowling ball, so I cut flower pic's from magazines to cover it. It's getting pretty worn and faded from the weather and I noticed last week a couple of pic's have completely worn away. I didn't seal it right when I first did it, should have sprayed it with the clear coat more than I did. It was my first attempt and I need to make a new one and take my time. I'd like to do one in bits of mirrored glass.
Oh, you say that AFTER I post the pic lol. Cool bowling ball. Mom had one on a stand and used it as a glazing ball. you couldn't tell what it really was
LOL Connie, I am sooo slow ... must have been typing when you posted the picture! I love the little flower pot wind chimes, very unique! You did a terrific job!
This is not one I made, it's something my sister sent me for my birthday a few years ago, same sort of idea using the little flower pots and little garden tools added ... but not nearly as pretty as yours! I will need to take it apart before long and re-do it with wire. It's put together with a thin jute which is raveling in spots ... if it breaks I will have broken flower pots on the ground!
Those are so cute. It gives people like me ideas :)
Oh, good! I'd love to see photo's when you get some made! If you could find some "kiddie" size garden tools, I think they'd work great for a project like that! ^_^
That is what I was thinking or some minis that you can get in the craft stores.
