For many years, I had some orange and purple Asiatic lilies growing together. I wasn't too crazy about them..a bit gaudy. So I dug them all out (I thought). And I created a new lily bed last year in a different spot. I had ordered some gorgeous Oriental lilies..they were gorgeous. Pale pink with cream and pale lilac with cream. I planted Shasta daisies in front of them to keep them from falling over on their face. This year, they have just bloomed..........and they are all white! And across the yard, where I had dug out the old lilies, up came a lily. And it was white! Can anyone tell me what is going on here?
Asiatic and Oriental Lilies
Did they ever bloom in the color you thought they were supposed to be? If this was the first year they flowered then I suspect you got sent the wrong bulbs.
I planted them in the fall of 2007. Last year they were fine. They didn't grow very tall, but they did bloom. This year, they are a lot taller, but........they are all white.
As for the one lily that emerged where you thought you removed them all - I'd bet a scale came off and that's what grew. Or else it may have been a baby bulb that you just didn't notice or look for because you weren't expecting it to happen.
I'm sure I must have overlooked a bulb when I dug them up. But how could it go from bright orange or purple to white? That's what I don't understand.
I'll ask a friend in the business to try and help you out. Her name on DG is Mainiac and she sells lilies through Faraway Flowers.
I wish I could help, but I don't have an answer. Lilies don't change colors that dramatically. The shades of the lilies can change based on soil PH, temperatures, etc. but they don't change colors to white. I suggest you post this question on the Lily Forum. Maybe someone else has some ideas how this can happen.
Thanks for posting, Ramona.
