Herbicide question

Windsor, CO

I have an extremely annoying problem. I live next to Open Space, and a while back the HOA management decided to plant, among other native grasses, some very invasive, non-native noxious Smooth Brome Grass. It travels with underground tendrils and now have invaded my Blue Grass lawn.

Does anyone know of a weed killer that would get rid of this stupid weed but not harm the lawn ?

Any suggestion is will be greatly appreciated!

I know ortho (and maybe round up) have weed sprays you attach to the hose that you are able to use without killing the lawn, I'm not sure how resistant your invasive will be, though.

If this stuff is a true grass, then a weed killer won't touch it. Broadleaf weeds respond to 2,4-D. If Smooth Brome Grass is a true grass, then anything that would kill it would kill other grasses, too.

According to the U. of Minnesota (yes, I know we're in Texas, but the web has a wealth of sites with information!) close mowing and repeated applications of glyphosate will take care of Smooth Bromegrass. Also overgrazing will discourage it. I guess there's no chance of you running a few head of cattle on the open space next to your lawn?

Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide. It will kill any plant it touches. If you spray the bromegrass that is growing in an area of grass you want to preserve, it will kill the other grass also and anything else the drift touches. Your August 3 post specifically asks about a product that won't hurt your lawn.

Dp72 is right, there is no such thing as an herbicide that selects out one species of grass from another.

Digging it out, as a solace, is good exercise!
