Holly love those leaves on that Port Odora!! Very nice!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Chantell, This is my first year for them I have always wanted to grow something with very large leaves and the few times I tried in the past were a bust. I am hoping to try making some leaf molds this fall with them.

Ohhhhh now THAT sounds like fun...esp with those pretties!!!

Re digging up cannas----

--Allow the first frost to kill all the foliage and stems...all limp....
--Cut back the dead foliage, but leave about 8" of the stem sticking up. Wait 2 more weeks.
--Now, carefully, dig up the WHOLE root mass. A digging fork works best. Try to dig all around the mass so you can lift the whole thing out as one.
--Gently knock off any large excess of soil, but leave any soil clinging to the roots be.
***Be careful! The tubers are very fragile. Don't mess too much with anything.
--Dry the whole thing somewhere completely--then store it--soil and all-- in a box or whatever in a
cool, dry place. You can throw some peat moss over it or some crunched up newspapers....
make sure there is no moisture left in the root ball before you store it.
--That's it until planting time!

--To divide--leave at least 3 eyes on each division for a nice plant.
You can cut off any of the spent roots and sections. They are done!

I would NEVER leave them in the ground! Not even here. They will rot.

Randy is also a cutie and a good sport! Yeah, those cosmos can get so tall be fore blooming, at least they were getting that way for me last year that I grew them. Then these summer storms can come along and knock dow nthe tall plants like that and sunflowers.

we put a piece of rebar in to support it... hopefully it will help this weekend.. just have to hope the top doesn't snap

Holly, I love your Port Odora! I've bookmarked it - if I can pull it off and get the bog garden ready for next spring I think it would look cool planted at the sunny end :) I also saw something with large leaves way back in the far corner next to the potting shed when I was looking at Ric's photo http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6949004 What is it?

LOL Allison - I spotted the rebar! Great photos, love those Begonias :) Also see that you have the Plectranthus I had last year and lost (photo 53?). You mentioned you really like my variegated Plectranthus - maybe you'd be up for a trade? Dmail me if you're interested :)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

thank you.. the begonias are doing just ok this year... guess the cool wet weather was messing with them as well... just glad they didn't rot... and that was the plectranthus in that photo.. can't believe those cuttings I gave my neighbor grew that well... I think there were 3 in that container....the momma doesn't look so happy ... then again I didn't repot it so maybe it's just too root bound and I think I had it in too shady of a spot... but yes I am interested and will dmail

Rcn, That is my Jack in the Pulpit ‘Arisaema Speciosum’ I picked up two of these in the Calla Lily co-op. Somehow I didn't notice that they aren't hardy to my area and almost gave them away and then decided to pot them and try to overwinter it in side. I will be a great plant for my GH when it finally gets done.
Only one of them grew for me and a couple of weeks ago I went to dump the pot with the other bulb in it and found that the bulb was still firm and had a few small roots so I put it back into the pot but still no show.

It has an exotic looking bloom and 3 huge and very interesting shaped leaves. It was one of the highlights of my garden. So very glad I didn't give it away at the swap.

Holly,

My neighbor has one in her bed....She is not a gardener...plants things and then forgets about them....
It is right across from my tomato bed--so I get to see it all the time.

It now has a cluster of seeds which are turning red. Do you know if it can grow from these seeds?
I would then spread them around in her bed.....
It seems to be a perennial here, as it came back from last year.

Gita I have a hardy Jack in the Pulpit and it does spread from the seeds. The ones I have came from the woods behind the house. When I saw these I thought how pretty they were and never noticed the hardy to Zone 8 marked on these.
Given the right spot it could grow in your zone 7. Plant files says it spreads by seeds, too. Mine didn't get any seeds hopefully I will be able to get a few more of these. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/56245/

Holly,

I just went out and took a picture of my neighbor's poor, neglected Jack-in-the-Pulpit...

Sad!

Gita, I'm going to start a new thread since this one is getting long. Why don't you repost your newest photos there so they won't be missed.
