Hummingbird Adventures #15

I think she's catching a few winks.

When she woke up from her nap, she went in for a drink.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I can't tell if she is after gnats or if she lost her balance on this one.

Thumbnail by SingingWolf
Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I know that this isn't Zoom, but she has a line by her eye that reminds me of one of his markings. She's got wings instead of blurs too!

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Last one from today.
Sally, I hope that you enjoyed seeing some of the antics of my hummer friends, today. I would have taken more photos, but thank gosh, the battery died! LOL!
Two hours later and I had a nap, battery was recharged and so was I. I guess the hummer had the right idea. Saved my favorite for the last.
Maybe in a couple of years my hummies will be as tolerant of my photo taking ways as Uncles are. I'll keep practicing.

Thank you SW, yes you gave me a smile, especially with that last one. A friend told me years ago a tip for taking shaky pics and I still try to remember to do it........tuck your elbows in and take a deep breath before you press the shutter. She would laugh if she saw me 'at the ready' waiting for hummers. LOL

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Sis, that's what somebody told me to do, too. I hold my breath until I start laughing!

SW, I wonder if that's pollen on Scruffy's beak in that first photo?
Have a look through your camera settings for an option to turn off the shutter sound.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Can't tell if that is pollen. It could be. The hibiscus, lantana, and salvia are blooming among other things in there.
You can turn off the noise of the shutter? I'll check. It bugs my pup, Spirit too. He is beginning to hate the camera unless I'm taking a photo of him. LOL!
Glad it cheered you up, Sally. A day in the life of my hummer friends.
I will try your technique, but it'll probably hurt, and definitely interfere with my singing! LOL!
Will use the tripod for some of those photos.
Got to get some photos today, in between chores and driving lessons with YS.
More soon. This is where I sit to take photos, as you can see, the hummers don't come too close. You can also the see the cords on the side of the gh. It's messy, and jungly, but we like it.
Feel free to jump in people! I know that some of you have hummers and stories and photos to share.
Have a great time today!

I came across that setting several days ago, SW. You might have to dig for it.

Try this - if you go here, you can d/l a manual to your computer. Then you should be able to search by keyword.

http://support.nikontech.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16309/p/1%2C791/c/187/r_id/116678

Try page 146 - the setting should be there.

How did you get so smart?
Thanks sweetie!

Just wanted to share, I have never noticed that my hummer eats from outside the bottom of the flower.

Wow, you are lucky, luckiemomoftoo! The hummer is probably after tiny little bugs, they like to collect down inside them petals. Really nice photo. Interesting colors too, I like that goldy yellow color. Do the feathers' color change with the angle of light that strikes it? Happens to me all the time when I photograph my hummer friends. Glad you shared it with us. Those little buggers sure are hard to get photos of aren't they?
Saved my bacon tonight. I wasn't able to get a single hummer photo today. Saw the hawk out in the front yard, and they always take cover when she's around.
I'll try again tomorrow, and see who turns up for a free meal. : )

Wow! Thanks never knew that! That hummer is around all day . Her Colors do change with my angle. I read a article that said get a clean bucket with a lid poke small holes. put rip fruit in it leave it outside for a few days. you will get fruit flys. put the lid on for a few more days they will breed. then when you see your hummers get as close as they will let you open the bucket to let some out and soon the hummers will know what that bucket means. I guess I will try it.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Keep us posted. I get way too many flies from the horse farm next door. But am curious to see how that works for you.
This was the only visitor to the h.feeder I saw on the 5th.
Sigh . . .

I was only able to get these two photos of the hummers yesterday.
Guarding the feeder.

Sorry about the quality of the photos. These where taken at dusk. In this one the hummer is feeding on my star jasmine which is pretty happy there.
Got some earlier today of a new hummer. Still have to down load the photos and then I'll post them.

Sorry folks for keeping you waiting. The seventh was my birthday, and the family had planned a nice dinner for me. Saturday, I took a me day and spent it down at the grove of oaks. I saw a lot of wild hummers that day. Sunday, I was in a lot of pain, so on Monday I went in for my tune up, and then slept all day. My apologies for not posting sooner. These photos were taken on Sally's Birthday on the 6th. Sorry your surprise is late!
Here is one of the "regulars".

Ooops, wrong photo! That is the rear end of a house finch!
If at first! Let me try again.

I think it's Zippy up there on their favorite perch.

I couldn't figure out what was going on down at the other end of the gh, so I zoomed in with the camera. Much to my amazement I saw this. I'm calling it Sally's Surprise in Honor of her Bday.
Some of the following aren't very good, I'm still working on learning the new camera.
Enjoy!

This is probably the worst, but the only one that shows the chest markings.

The visitor seems to like the salvia (?). Got lots of great photos of it's back. LOL!

Thumbnail by SingingWolf
Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I cropped this one, but am unhappy with the grainy texture.
Jonathan is back from his camping trip, and says he'll help me finger it out when he gets done house sitting, and has some free time.

She eventually flew up and "hid" in the bougainvillia (sp?) at the other end of the gh.

Another.

I'm finally starting to get better at the telephoto control. LOL!
Pretty markings on it's back.

She/he reminds me of someone else's hummers. Was it skwinter's? Haven't looked up the kind yet. Just know that I was really happy to see her feeding from the plants, in my gh. Never saw her try to eat from the feeders.
I like her beak in this photo.

Thumbnail by SingingWolf
Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

The fan started running so she turned her head.

Thumbnail by SingingWolf
Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

She is on to me!
The last I saw of her, Zippy came in and was highly indignant that this stranger was in her private domain.
I haven't seen her since. I wonder if she was just passing through?
More soon.

Hey, y'all! SW asked me to come share this with you.

I have 3-4 hummers that visit my feeder and yesterday I was treated one of them chasing/attempting to chase away a finch.

Here is the little female. I haven't named the females because I can't tell them apart. The male I've name Tuxedo.

(Zone 7a)

The finches. There are 2 female house sparrows, as well, but they preferred not to get involved.

That didn't work. Let's try the sneak attack.

(Zone 7a)

Let's try the cherry tree. That pine was too exposed.

Thumbnail by kwanjin
(Zone 7a)

Yikes! That didn't work, either! The finch is on the right and the hummer is one the left.

Is she gone yet?
