What expressions (or words) drive you nuts?? - Part 3

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

(I knew it was just me.)

Digger, I have no idea what how rad means. How radical? How radioactive?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Emily - I listed 'At the end of the day' as one of the absolute worst ones in the very first post in the first thread! As I said, whenever I hear anyone say that in person, I interject, 'Night?!!', right after 'day' is out of their mouth.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Maybe it means quitting time?

Rad=radical

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

"Rad" means radical in hippie. Where the heck were you guys. Sally I thought, knowing you up close and personal, you were hip.

Let's add the traditional down South "Bless your heart". It really means "Go to h...". Wait, I think I really like that one! Let's keep it. lol

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

heehee, I use the phrase good for you, but that's not what it really means

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Has, "If you say so" come up? That might be like "good for you".

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

But it has to be said with the obligatory wave of the head and with attitude. :)

Dahlonega, GA

No Carrie , It isn't just you .
Maypop , I don't know Everything . I just think I do . It fooled you , didn't it ?
My dgd said that several times after I commented on something and wasn't sure if she was putting me down or not . This was back when she was about 13 and had never heard that expression b4 . Kids at that age don't think the ancient generation is mentally capable of going to the bathroom by themselves and using paper.
I love "Bless her heart"
"if you say so " " If YOU say so " "IF you say so" "If you SAY so" all have different meanings .
Lordy , Maypop , when I get together with you again , I'll really have to be on my toes . I can just see us throwing this stuff back and forth .LOL digger

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

:O :O I SO didn't know that 'Bless your heart' meant that! I better stay on my tippytoes too when I'm in the south!

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

I love "bless you heart," too, and I couldn't resist googling the phrase:

http://www.villines.com/Internet/bless.htm

Dahlonega, GA

Dahlia , there is a vast difference in bless your heart and bless her heart . You can say anything mean and gossipy about a woman and follow it with bless her heart . That means you don't hold it against her and sympathise with her when you really don't and really hate her guts . In other words , you can get away with it (nasty and mean). Exp. Her daughter sat on a dirty toilet and now she's pregnant , bless her heart . Real meaning , The hussy ran around with every - - - - in the county and now mama is trying to white wash it and I don't blame the hussy kid , look who raised her . She deserves to have to raise the baby too . Bless your heart can mean the same to your face , but usually is for real sympathy for a situation . LOL Us southern gals can read each other , but we can really keep the men on their toes and off balance . digger

Dahlonega, GA

Great link . digger

Thomaston, CT

LOL love that explanation of Bless Her Heart!

Dahlonega, GA

In all honesty , I've been in almost every state in the USA and I've never been to one in the northeast that the people weren't super sweet , so we , in the south aren't the only ones that give great hospitality , altho I can't speak for some of us on that point . (our hospitality ) LOL digger

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Funny stuff.... People often bless my heart when they learn I have MS.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Pretty much, people are people.

I find it sad that we are losing our regional differences. You can travel anywhere in the country and eat the same food, shop at the same stores, go to a mall that looks just like the one near your home.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Bill, I just want that regular sing-song ice cream truck song. Might as well go out with kids around.

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

OK, when I was a kid the ice-cream truck came around the corner playing an extremely tinny yet piercing rendition of "Casey Would Waltz With a Strawberry Blond." There was a sort of Doppler-effect going on as the truck rounded the corner. Then we kids rushed out into the street, and the song halted, probably mercifully as far as the driver felt.
It was the BEST sound I knew in those days. Not a bad way to go out, Dave.
Was this a regional So Cal ice-cream truck song? I haven't heard the ice-cream truck near enough times in the last several decades!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

David, you are absolutely right. (And happy holidays.) We used to have a rule that when we traveled, we weren't allowed to go to the same chains we fgo to at home. E.g., when we're in DC or Austin, we're not allowed to go to Burger King or Subway, and have exactly the same food we would have at home, It worked pretty well (and was lots more interesting!) until DD#1 was diagnosed with celiac disease .... then it got more complicated, although Burger King or Subway are pretty useless for wheat-free food, except maybe french fries.

Dahlonega, GA

Durn Carrie ,I told you that when it was said to your face , It was usually sincere .
I like the idea of switching usual to something different . I'd like to find a real ice cream parlor for a real chocolate malt , or even better ,a choc soda . No , make that two choc sodas. digger

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I try to stay away from chain restaurants when I travel I usually ask opinions of a workers(wherever) and ask them their favorite restaurant, usually an out of the way, non touristy one.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I try to as well Jen, but I end up eating Thai or Chinese or Italian. Less regional food options, more international ones. In Louisville we asked for local food and the locals we asked were not sure what that was.

Thanks Carrie but no holidays for me (raised Catholic)

Dahlonega, GA

I try never to pass up Chinese buffet . Dh thinks I'm crazy , but love the flavors and need Hoy mustard mixed with sweet and sour sauce to dip everything in , after I drizzel the hot oil over everything . Don't try to give me that mustard in little packages , I'll find another place to eat . Don't care for chili sauce , HOT OIL . digger

Thomaston, CT

Ate at a nice Thai place in K-port last week----I'm not a lobstah eater.

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

Our ice cream man used to carry - and use - a flask, lol. Never realized what it was till I was a bit older...

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

love chinese food, although i end up regretting eating it afterwards, step on the scale the next day and it is 5-7 pds. more than normal because of the sodium - takes two days to get it out of my system.

Dahlonega, GA

Two days out of my life won't hurt me and at my age , who cares ? You must be like me , don't drink water with my food . Bad for us . digger

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Had to give up the chinese food too because of the sodium, but used to love bourbon chicken!

Dahlonega, GA

I'ts lemon chicken , coconut shrimp , and anything else I can get on my plate .There's a dish I love , mala chicken , hot and sweet . Don't find it but one place so far , might just be something they dreamed up . It isn't like the recipes I've found for it . digger

Thomaston, CT

MMMM--those all sound good---notice how we usually get distracted by food!

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Dave, I hear ya. I went into a chinese restaraunt once and the family was sitting at a table, eating out of the same bowls with chopsticks, and it looked so good! I asked them what it was and could I order that and they said no, its not on the menu.It looked a lot more nutricious than the saucy stuff they sold.Had some vegetables I couldnt identify but definitely wanted to try. I think it was real Chinese food and not Chinese American.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Hey, digger did all that rain effect you at all, in Dahlonega?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Joy, Yeah there is a big difference with real Chineese (or Mexican, etc) food. I look for Asian customers at Asian restaurants, etc

Edited to be legible

New language, Dave??

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Wow Victor, that was a mess.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Too funny.
I always look for the same thing.
There is a resaurant near where we used to live that they had 2 separate menus one for the Americans and one for the Chinese, there was some weird looking stuff on the Chinese menu.
My sister visited China and was fed moose nose and bear paw...I don't know if I'd be able to eat that...just give me some rice please!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

My niece went to China with her volleyball team and she said once they served chicken with the head still attached. She said no one ever ate very much, and the coach would take them to McDonalds before going out to eat.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Reminds me of Christmas Story!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

funny

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i've been to Asia numerous times and they do serve some pretty strange food - at least to westeners - once saw two guys barter over who gets the fish head - could not help thinking of the old tom & jerry cartoons when the guy who won the fish head put the whole thing in his mouth and then removed only the skelton - he had sucked off everything else - it was a steamed fish btw
