I am not participating but if ya'll don't mind answering some questions, please. I think I'm a bit dense but I didn't really understand what the difference is between the types. It seems to me that there should just be a list like part of the description. As a new person I am sure I'd never be able to tell especially in a young plant. and maybe not even if I had experience.
Gessie Gail mentioned that she had only grown trailers the new way but what is the new way?
Growing a AV trailer the japanese way
annacanna - there are two types of trailers - the kind that grow more bush-like, and the other that could be considered as creeping. The bush-type do exactly that - grow more bushy. The 'stems' are stiffer and less pliable. The 'creeping' trailers have branches that are not so stiff, and you can manipulate up to a point.
I will look and see if I can find my pic of Tiny Wood Trail from earlier this year. That one is a bush-type.
Here is a 'creeper' - Rob's Humpty Doo. This is one I am thinking of using for the Japanese method in the other thread . . .
Let me find an article on the way AVSA recommends growing trailers now. I think I mentioned that our club president says the Japanese method was used until the mid to late 90's..........be back when I find an article. I do know that it involves removing the new leaves of each crown.......
Here is an article I found..........then you can compare the two methods...........

Thanks for the pictures and the link to that, but I'm still being dense. I'm sorry because I know you're tyring to help. I don't know how to look at the picture or the plant and tell which it is. Is there a list somewhere so people like me who are new or just can't see the difference? I mean, if I wanted to buy one today (expect for the two mentioned above so I know what they are) how would I know which type it would be? I wouldn't know how to grow it using this method because I couldn't tell.
I still have trouble telling the difference............I scanned Jan's article and I need to read it again.......I don't know what I am doing either........on the Japanese method............I usually just cheat and plant 3 trailers in one pot and pinch out the tops and let them do whatever they want to do ............smiling..........
That brings up a question that I wanted to ask a little while back. I have been growing episcias and just now getting started with a.v.s myself. Why do you pinch out the tops on the trailers? Is it supposed to give more energy to the stems?
Pinching off the crown off a trailer is supposed to encourage new suckers to form.
Gotcha...Thanks!
I went and disbudded my Rob's Humpty Doo . . . and I can't do anymore! I can't get myself to remove anything else! In desperation, I have sent an email to Danny, and I'm hoping he will be able to get to our next meeting early to help me with it!
What is wrong with Humpty Doo?
Nothing . . . she's growing lopsided, that's all, so I was going to trim her up . . . but can't get myself to do it. If I can get Danny to do it, then I can blame it all on him!!!
There ya go.
Is she sitting in the middle of the pot exactly? That has been a problem for me in the past........I never quite get them perfectly planted in the middle thus causing all new foliage to go to one side of the plant. (just thought......maybe you are talking about a trailer...i am not)
No, I think she is lopsided. I've got it so that the short side is towards the lights right now.Danny replied to the email already . . . he says it's hard to tell, but with removing a few leaves, it may even be ready for the state show! He said to bring it on meeting night so he can take a look. Oh, that would be nice . . . I love the blooms on this puppy!
WOW,,This thread took a long time to load,
READY,SET,GO,
Hope everyones got there plants. If you haven't started this project already, please do.avpat should be back this week,so she won't be to much behind us.Remember.there should only be 4 leaves left on your plants, repot and put your plant under the center of your lights.
