Growing a AV trailer the japanese way

Ya reckon it would be better to use semi-mini or standard size trailers?

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

But Gail...how do you know what variety is what???? Everything I have read says either standard, semi, or mini trailer. Nothing about if it is bush or creeper. LOL!!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Most are bush and I would think it doesn't matter what size...........I am trying to think of a creeper that grows straight up............they grow faster.............so I don't think it makes much difference. I am using all bush kind........

I don't think I have a creeper unless it is Chippery Trail...........a mini trailer.......

Just to make them pretty, I have always planted 3 plants to a pot (but that is against the show rules) so I just do it for fun. This will be a real challenge to do this from one plant............Marjorie said she thought it would probably take 4 or 5 months to get a nice 5 or 6" pot pan...........a pot pan is only one inch high so people can use the clear plastic water catcher for pot plants.....

Let me take a few pictures and remind you that I know as little as you all do...................bad quick pics
The one on the back is Glitter Fountain, a bush standard trailer with only one plant.
The one in the front has 3 plants in the pot........am going to separate them and try all four of them..........the Japanese way.
Did you notice that the lady said not to pinch until the bud has a color and then snip out..........as opposed to pinching out the 2 center leaves...like I have done on the next picture. (I can't use the next picture because I have already pinched the centers out.........and Japanese way doesn't do this)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

This is Champane Pink, a standard or semi mini...........trailer...........she isn't growing and I have been pinching out the center leaves.......so........I am going to put her in a 5" pan pot and pin her stems down and just let her take off..............I am not going to separate her now........

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

This is a miniature trailer called Chippery Trail..........about 5 plants in there (laughing out loud).........since she grows so straight up, I am going to separate these out and try just for fun to see if they can be grown the Japanese way (I would call her a maybe a creeper)................I don't know what I am talking about...........

Just remember it doesn't matter which trailer you choose.....grow several and see what happens..........

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Maybe this will help more.........see how I have taken all the bottom leaves off the stem ..........in this picture. Now I can put her in a flat larger pot and pin her stem down with hair pins.......she will root right where I put her causing a new crown to form from the original plant.

I will watch your experiment closely (just announcing my lurking state), it sure sounds fun. I wonder if one could use an Alsobia for this? What do you all think?

Alexandra

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

We are now mixing apples and oranges (smiling)

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Alsobia will creep and trail w/o any assisstance. It naturally grows to form a trailing mound goofybulb. If you want, I'll post a pic of mine, which I cut back in the spring, and have ignored since. Bet they had this plant in mind when they developed the Japanese method!

Gosh that is pretty!!

Richland, MI(Zone 5b)

Gail, please excuse my ignorance. I have absolutely no experience whatsoever with trailers of any kind.

Phoebe, that's very nice looking! I yet have to see mine flower.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That wasn't ignorant at all.................I was teasing because this is going to be a challenge for jannich to start a thread for this project and keep it to only everyone's progress on growing av trailers the Japanese way..................that is because we all like to have fun!!!!

She will probably start a new one once everyone gets their trailers..............

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

chat away ^_^ we are all here to learn and talk about something different. If nothing else happens, we will all get a great looking plantsout of it.I'm going to stick with a semi-mini to grow,we all have to remember the size these plants will be a the end of this project.

Bonnie,I'm so glad your going to play along with us!

Gail,Thanks for emailing your friend.Sounds to me like it doesn't make any difference what kind of trailer we use.I haven't had any time to search the net so I'll just be using the plants I have.

Alexandra,Hi Lurking is great but participating is better! Won't you join us and learn to grow a nice looking plant? It will be fun as we all go along and chat about the growing process.I have a cutting to get you started and a pan pot.

Hi Jan,How are you? That is a pretty plant you have!

Anyone have a mini trailer your going to try this with?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am so excited........I ordered trailer leaves from Cedar Creek and thought that they all died because I forgot them on the bottom shelf where I couldn't see them. Although they are not ready to be potted up and need some tender loving care with fertilizer...............a lot are going to make it.

My right knee doesn't bend (for about a month) so I can't get down to the bottom shelves without sprawling my fat body on the floor (LOL).........

We are going to have a good time this winter with lots of trailers..........they are my favorites anyway.......

If I am going to show the good plants, I have to show the ugly ones, too...........take a gander
***edited to say that these are the trailers which are going to make it (with lots of love)
Ramblin' Silver, Cirelda, Senk Longlegs, Shiawase Trail, Ramblin' Ruby, Honeysuckle Rose, King's Trail, and Pixie Showoff............

I have alot of baby trailer plants, and alot of leaves of trailers rooted and just starting to produce. I just don't know which are creeping and which are bush trailers. Pixie Blue was mentioned on the first page of the article as a creeper, maybe I will try it with that one - but does anyone know how I can find out what type of trailers I have?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Just for fun, let's all guess........you make a list for us and we can look them up..........I am beginning to learn how to tell the difference.
Let me find a picture of Pixie Blue
Pixie Blue (2598) 09/16/1974 (L. Lyon) Single purple-blue/darker center. Plain, ovate. Miniature trailer

I can already tell I don't know how to tell...........because in this picture I can't tell that her growth is upright.........just when I think I can tell the difference, I see a picture like this and I am back to peg 1!!!

She is awesome.....might have to add her name to my list of trailer avs.........at Violetventure.....

OK, I'm in too. I have several miniature trailers but I think I'd like to try Tiny Wood Trail and Taffy Bon Bon. They seem to have very different growing habits, so it should be interesting. I also have more than 1 of each so if I screw it up I won't loose everything.

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Morning ^_^

Wonderful,Glad you ladies are joining in on this project!

avpat,I think a mini trailer would be gorgeous grown this way. What will you be using as the pan pot? A 5 inch pan pot?

lhettenhausen,I think one of the cuttings mrs bonnie offered has a white/yellow bloom.Chantaspring?

jmp24,I searched the internet last night, trying to find info about creeping or bush trailers.I couldn't find anything that made sense to me.So I went to the AVSA website and asked the question,How to tell the difference. It said I would have a answer in a day or two.I'll post the answer.

Medford, NJ

Thanks Jannich - as Gail mentioned, not easy to tell by looking

I have:
Woodland Sprite
Baby Brian
Pixie Blue
Shiawassee Trail
Lady Trail
Fancy Trail
Cherokee Trail
Pink Mint

I may have a few others growing from leaves that I just don't know are trailers off the top of my head. Pink Mint looks bushy, Baby Brian looks creepy. The rest I can't even guess. I only have one Pixie Blue and one Woodland Sprite so I am not sure I want to experiment with that one just yet, I may take a few leaves first and be assured I will have a replacement because I really like it.

Atco, NJ

I'm looking for a combination that will work with wick watering. I'll let you know what I come up with. Right now I have Blueberries n' Cream growing in a low wide plastic container and had noticed that the shape of this container seemed to allow the plant to spread out really well. So can the container itself make a difference in how the plant responds? I guess that remains to be seen. Maybe I need to try this project with Blueberries n' Cream too.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Just for fun, I am going to try several kinds and I will be looking for jannich's answer from AVSA.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

Hi All;
I thought i might try this container? It's a deli container, the 1/2 qt. size, measures about 41/2 in. round, i have used these before & they usually do quite well. what do you think?
bonnie

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Bonnie, I know nothing other than what is told to me about this project, but Marjorie Bullard says the containers (after the plant gets to growing and ready to be pinned down) should be no more than an inch high. That is why I asked her to name some containers that would work.........she said that if people don't have pot pans, then the next best thing would be those flimsy clear bottom round 'things' that people put under their pot plants to catch the water.

If your container has worked, then why not use it again..........I have some food containers made by glad that are really not more than 2" high at the most..........

Medford, NJ

Bonnie, I have some of those deli containers, but mine are a little different. They are about 1 3/4 inches high, just under 5" wide. I think this is the size I get when I ask for a 1/4 lb of something at the deli. The 4" clear plastic plant saucers, which I buy local, are about 1 1/4" high. The saucers probably come closest to what is recommended.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have to remember to drill holes in the bottom of them........or stick holes in these plastic saucers.

Richland, MI(Zone 5b)

Hello, again! Sorry for the late post...

Jannich, thank you so much for the offer. There are two things that make me reluctant to exchange the lurker position with the "scientist doing experiments" at this time, I'll send you a Dmail after feeding the hubby...

About containers, though. I have a few styrofoam shallow ones, about 4-5in diameter (maybe 3-4in at the bottom) and max 2in high. The kind used for salads in fast-foods and cafeterias. Do AVs like styrofoam containers? I use them every now and then for seed starting.

I will follow you all with very much attention.
Alexandra

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Is everyone gearing up and gathering trailers? I have never tried to grow avs in styrofoam cups but I guess if they were small enough, anything would work (with holes in the bottom for drainage)

Highland, IL

I have to get them ordered, will do so by tomorrow. sorry for the delay!

Medford, NJ

I have a few, just haven;t decided which ones to try with yet. I have this one called Pink Mint, which actually has a very strange way of growing, it is like a little bush, everything straight up in one bunch, but it has a kind of flexible feel to it, so it might be a good candidate for all the pinning and manipulating of stems. I also found that I have babies growing from a Baby Brian and a Woodland Sprite leaf, so I might try with those.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just ordered Pink Mint to use and she is in the mail now..........want to try both creepers and bush ones............

I'll have a trailer on the way soon and it's one I'm super-tickled about!! Had I seen this thread a few hours earlier, I would have bought 'Scuba Diver'. I think it's just gorgeous. http://www.violetgallery.com/html%20pics/scubadiver.html But it was too late to add it to my order. LOL I may get 'Scuba Diver' later on, especially if I do well with this experiment and the other AVs I ordered.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just love pink trailers...............well, purple and blue, too! (LOL)

I love the serrated leaf edges and simple pink flowers of Scuba Diver. It's just a clean, simple, elegant plant. ^_^

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Awwww....I like Scuba Diver too! Very pretty--love the simplicity!

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Oh, RainGazer...that will make a beautiful plant for our project!

South, TX

Scuba diver is a doll!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Hello project group ^_^

I hope everyone is still excited about this project. As soon as your all set with plants let me know and we will start.

mrs bonnie, your container looks perfect to me.I was also thinking if someone was using a mini trailer,a potato chip dip container ,you know the small size, would be good too. It you what it fancy rough it up with a little sand paper and put a coat of paint on it.

Alexandra, your styrofoam containers sound good also.I use styrofoam cups all the time to pot things in.A friend send me some cups, smaller than the coffee cup size and they work perfect.I have to try to remember to ask where she got them so I could get more.I got your d-mail haven't read it yet, just need the energy to write back.I will soon promise.I just need a few more days to feel better. ^_^

Oh Amy,scuba diver is a cute one.So which trailer did you end up getting?

Sally and Jan I hope you will be doing this project with us!

What till this project is over with! I already have another lined up right behind this one.I'll be collecting materials so all you will need is a good healthy AV baby about 4-5 inches high and a pot ^_^

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks for the ideas for containers. WOW...another project waiting...Will the AV needed for the next on be a standard?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh fun.........Jan......we will have projects all winter.............can't wait........

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Hi group!

This is the answer I got the AVSA on trailers.
