Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Good for you jannich..........the 'finder' of all pertinent information. This answers so many questions.

Medford, NJ

thanks for getting that information, I really should join the AVSA

Highland, IL

We won't start this till everyone has a plant ^_^

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

My, my, my...what we find in our mail! Gather around all because this is unbelievable. Gail said she would set me up so I could participate in this project. I think she has done everything for me BUT the project!!! She has sent 2 different plants, a wicking mat, cut wicking, fertilizer, cups AND she has apparently cut the bottoms of the cups for me. I feel like a kid at Christmas. Thank you so much for going to all of this trouble. The pressure is on me now...I hope I don't kill them.

Gail, my address is......

So someone correct me if I am wrong, but the object here is to remove bottom leaves, sort of creating a "neck" --- then said neck, when it is long enough, will be pinned down to the soil....
(I plan on using those U-shaped hair pins if they will work)

Now where does one see new crowns form?

I will be doing this with only mini's and semi minis, none of my standard trailers are ready.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That sounds exactly right to me but this is also new to me.

I had 3 trailers in a pot anyway, so I took the bottom leaves off of each one and here is what she looks like now. I even used the hair pins to hold the stems down. I know I am only supposed to have one...........to a pot......but just playing. They are in a 3" squatty pot right now.

What is that one Gail? It's so pretty!

i think you will have to show us a clear picture of what it's suppose to look like?I could not tell from the last picture

That is 'Champagne Pink' from Goldleaf several months back............she is growing slowly but I had one a couple of years ago and they are beautiful blooms and foliage.

Nice! I'll keep that one in mind, however a lot of my pink leaf varieties are tanking for some reason. I just lost Rob's Suicidal Squirrel. :-(

Oh please don't start yet! Not everyone has there trailer yet.I just sent a box out this morning.

When we do start, look at the first page of the project. The idea is to only leave the 4 leaves on your plant and burying the rest of the neck and repotting it into a 2 1/2 pot.I would think if your growing a mini you could put it ina smaller pot.

Medford, NJ

so, in a nutshell:

1.) remove all leaves leaving 4 at the top, which will help to create a neck

2.) repot to bury the neck

3.) place plant closer to lights to encourage some straight upright growth

4.) the straight upright growth, when long enough, will be pinned down to the soil, starting the spreading process

Sounds like it will be a long term project!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

We will gladly wait until everyone has their plant and thanks for rereading the article, Jan. You will have to be our teach with jmp backing up your instructions. I asked Marjorie Bullard, our club president how long it would take to get a decent looking trailer this way and she estimated maybe 4 or 5 months at least. (and that isn't a big trailer at that point she says)

This will be a great fall and winter project............

Richland, MI(Zone 5b)

Hello, everyone! I'm in the game! I received today a wonderful present, from a lovely and generous lady you all know. Not only she came up with this great experiment, but she encouraged me to get in and enjoy!

Lookie here, I am ready! Just say when... and let the fun begin!

Thanks again, Jan!

wow, you did hit the jackpot................We know how special Jannich is!

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Awesome, goofybulb! Looks like she went even further and gave you some extra leaves. Very nice of her!!!!!

Gail, as bad as I hate to say it, that tiny one didn't make it. I did my best to help it hang on. The Shiawassee is doing good so I will have to use her. I am so sorry.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

well........I never should have tried to send a leaf pot in vermiculite and perlite anyway......but those were the only trailers I had at the time..............

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

I thank you so much for trying to help me out...I just hate I lost it.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

It is just a plant and there are plenty more .........smiling......

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Hi,Glad the trailer made it ok! happy growing to you Alexandra.

Is anyone still needing a trailer ? I have 2 more rooted if anyone needs one.

Highland, IL

I got mine from Greendragon, WOW!!!! Thanks Gail for telling me about him! My plants are awsome!! I'm ready, I think. I'm going to re-read the instructions, and please be ready to hold my hand!!! I think I already have questions!! LOL

Keep me posted, and I'm not in a hurry, just when everyone is ready. I love this group project!!

Laura H

I'm ready! I have Cirelda to use for the project. Thank you, Bonnie! :o)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

jannich doesn't feel well today..............is trying to sleep............just keep growing them on to a bigger size until everyone has theirs............
Cirelda is on the prettiest trailers I know of.

Laura, isn't Fred just the best!! Kindest, dearest, most honest ebay vendor I have met. Love his tiny plants for only 3 bucks..........

Hey, Gail. I thought that line about Fred was mine. He sent a message saying he really appreciates all the new business. So everybody keep ordering from The Greendragon Trading Post. You won't be disappointed.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

waiting for my box from them.
bonnie

Atco, NJ

Bonnie, it will be worth the wait. All the anticipation makes the day of arrival that much more exciting. Can't wait to hear from you after the plants arrive.

Pat

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

He is just my new favorite vendor...........I hope he keeps adding new ones...............
Bonnie, his plants are so tiny and healthy.........not a broken leaf.........just perfect symmetry or you get luck and have two baby plants in one pot.....separate them easily (unless it is a trailer and then I cheat and leave both in a new pot)

I got carried away this week and ordered 12 more of his..........smiling........now I may have to go to ebay and sell some other plants.........this is terrible............

Pat, on another post, I told everyone that you had told me about him.........and that I might should be keeping my mouth closed..........you are so generous to want all of us to know about him........

Atco, NJ

Gail, Fred does such a great job that he deserves to have everyone know about him. There's no reason that any of us should waste our money on vendors who we just can't depend on. I was just lucky to have found Fred (The Greendragon Trading Post). Believe me I'm happy to see his name being passed around on this forum. If anyone else has found a really reliable vendor I hope they will also pass the information on to everyone.

I had a total of 23 plants from him this week, including my bonus plants. I told you I just lost control and bought everything last weekend. Morgan's Declan Duff just bloomed today. It's the prettiest little flower. I tried taking pictures but only had my phone so the pictures just are not clear enough to show you this plant. If I can find my camera I'll try posting a picture.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I almost bought Morgan's Declan Duff.......oh well..............good opportunity to go back and buy more of them.........they are already on the wicked grid in a permanest tray and actually growing........he evidently really hardens them off before sending out.........good grower he is!!!

I hope you post a picture of Morgan's Declan Duff.

Highland, IL

Just an FYI gals, I gave you all full credit for me knowing about him. I even got a "bonus" plant! and a coupon for my next purchase!! Boy has he got our numbers for sure!!!! My plants were not as tiny, I will post a picture.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Pat is so nice about telling when she finds a good vendor..........Let's all share our good news about a really good source of plants.

Anxious to see what yours look like, Laura!!

Atco, NJ

See that! One order and you're hooked. No one but another AV lover could ever understand why I go on and on about him. And it really only takes one order to convince people that he is simply the best out there. Enjoy and send those pictures. I'm really loving these pictures now that I know how to do it too.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Pat, you are very responsible for me getting back into avs..........and loving every minute of them!!

Atco, NJ

I'm honored to be part of the reason you are back into AVs. And I thank you for welcoming me into your group. You have been so friendly and helpful. What more could I ask for. I feel like I truly belong here. You are all wonderful people. Sharing and caring seems to be the common thread here. I love it.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

If I had a lot of local friends who liked to grow, I probably wouldn't stay on DG so much. Not being able to share the love of gesneriads and other plants with other people would be so lonely (I think).

Atco, NJ

You're absolutely right. I think that's why we're all here. I have lots of friends but none of them care about plants. We have other things in common, but not my AVs.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Here Lin!

(Zone 1)

Arrrrgh! I lost my entire post again! I'm beginning to wonder if it's NOT my needing a manicure (typing between keys because my nails are too long) and maybe something is going on with my laptop ... this has happened numerous times the past couple of days! Grrr!

Anyhow ... Thanks phoebes for pointing me in the right direction. I couldn't find this thread and I don't know how in the world I missed it to begin with, I see Jan began it the end of July! I'm getting old and can't remember my own name half the time anymore!

Well, I saw Gail (I think) mention something on another thread about y'all doing an experiment with trailers ... and it got me to googling for trailing AV's. ^_^ Gail, It's all YOUR fault! ^_^ I don't have any AV's and didn't think I wanted to grow them again because they seem to require more attention than my sometimes very short attention span brain can handle! Well, I saw I think it was Rob's site that said trailers don't need to be on grow lights, that they can handle a bright window. Now, I'm thinking I would like to try growing a trailer from a leaf or maybe a plant. I tried a couple of mini trailers once but the teensy plants don't do well in my care, they don't seem to survive long at all. I was looking at all the pretty pictures of standard and semi miniature trailers and now I'm thinking I MUST try one, just one to see if I can grow it, LOL. I'm still going to think about it a little while longer before ordering one though. I figured I would read up a bit on them, and when I googled "growing trailing AV's", this article by DG'er Critterologist popped up: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2147/ and of course the info at Rob's Violet Barn: http://www.robsviolet.com/trailing_violets1.htm and this too: http://72.41.11.187/trailfs.pdf

Now I'm going back to the top of this thread and read every post to see what I've missed and then later this evening I'm going to study up on the trailers! I may just have to give one a try. I can picture a bunch of little hanging baskets in my guest room window with trailing AV's cascading over the sides. Oh gee ... did I say that? Somebody STOP me please ... I have way too many plants to take care of as it is! ^_^

(Zone 1)

By the way ... this thread is getting long. I'm not on dial up so have no problem but I've heard others say when a thread gets upwards of 100 posts/replies it's hard for dial up folks. I will watch for a new thread to come up.
