I was reading a old gessie magazine and came across this article.I would love to grow a trailer like this someday, and thought it would be a great group project. We could post as the trailer grows.Any interest?
Growing a AV trailer the japanese way
Do you have any links to how it's done, Jan? You know I'm up for trying anything plant related! LOL If I could use a self-watering pot, I could probably do it.
I don't have any trailers but I would love for you to post a pic and show us updates.
Well, I'd definitely try it with you! No guarantees on how I'd do, but we'll find out. LOL I actually got brave and ordered 8 AVs today! Do you believe that? I've done so well with the two in self-watering pots that I thought I'd try more. I have only skimmed the article above, but will read over it better and see if there's a way I could come up with a self-watering pot (or something that works as one) to use. A community project! How fun! Great idea, Jan! ^_^
That is so sweet of you to offer but I am afraid I might kill it doing an experiment lol. What would you use to pin them down? Looks like it would take awhile but it would be awesome to post pics in stages!
The article says they used bonsai pins but I'll be using bobby pins or I have some thing-a-majigs that my hubby had that looks like a big heavy staple.LOL.
I started my little plant yesterday.I took off the lower leaves and have it under the center of the lights about 10 inches away.I think the point is to get more roots from the beginning.
Edit ^_^ I forgot, I also put it in a 2 1/2 pot
Amy,I'm glad your getting some AV's! ^_^ Hope one is a trailer

No wonder my trailers look like heck................I ws too concerned pinching the centers on the top and not removing the lower leaves.........This is absolutely phenomenal information. I can't thank you enough.
Jan............let's everyone start trying to do this the Japanese way............I am potting up some baby trailers if someone doesn't have a trailer...........they won't be big enough to ship though for a few weeks...........
This is the best information anyone has posted in a very long time...........Thank you, Jan, so much!!!
Jan offered me one but I am afraid of killing it.
I have some babies.....and it doesn't matter if they die.............I will be potting them up this weekend......if we are careful, I can send a couple of the same one out in 2 weeks........surely one will make it..............Jan......hate to be bossy but I have too many avs right now......and will send them to aspenjocop.
I am going to try my best and find this particular cultivar that Jannich showed us called.....will have to read again........
I just looked up 'Santa Fe Trail' and there are three.........a semi miniature by Sorano...that would be a no for the picture we saw........and then there was one by Baker...........and one by Fredette........so I am going to look for the latter two by name.........
This looks really great!! I would kill to have a violet look like that!
It would be a great group project. Everyone could comment on their different problems and successes (is that spelled right?). Wishing you gals great luck!!
YOu have to do it , too, Melanie!!! If you don't have a trailer, I will send you one..............we are all starting this new project............I don't know how to grow a pretty trailer.....have been doing all the wrong things when I saw this article and realized it!!!
No Gail, I don't have a trailer. Besides, I'm still trying to get that blasted one leaf to give me ears!!! LOL!! You are the one with the excellent green thumb. Everything that comes near you just thrives. LOL!!
Jan, hold up on starting the project. Please wait until us "slackers" can catch up with you :)
Jannich will hold up until everyone has a trailer and is ready to go........she is a sweetheart........we don't all have to have the same size trailer.........just sharing our ups and downs will be fun in learning.
Melanie.....you have a dmail.........
No Jan, I didn't get any trailers. I didn't have luck with them before, so I thought I'd start with standards and go from there. I'll have to get one because I really do want to try this. It sounds like fun!
Wow, wonderful information. Amazing pictures.
Sally, join us in the sharing of trying to grow trailers this way. I am thrilled to think how much we are all going to learn. Jan got this out of a 1992 AVSA magazine. Amazing, isn't it?
Yes, it is!
oh no..... now I got to get a trailer too?? I will try it! what the heck!! When would you like to start?
Laura H
Ok, I'm looking at trailers, I do not know anything about them. I would like something with a little bit different color, maybe white, yellow or even green blooms. Can anyone recommend any that they have or have seen??
Give me until in the morning to search for a good trailer.........purples, pinks and blues are usually the prettiest trailers..............but who knows? Glad you are joining us............
ONe of my very favorites I just ordered is Orchid Trail.......only got one plant and the auction ended but Cedar Creek says they are posting more plants on Saturday and Monday so i haven't paid.........they had some good ones.......for 4.00 or 4.50?
Orchid Trail (H. Pittman) Double orchid. Dark green. Semiminiature trailer (DAVS 1283, TX Hyb)
The picture of her in First Class is not good.............
Tomorrow we will hunt for green or red, etc..........
I'm going to have to get a trailer, too. Do we want to all use the same one or different ones? Jan, what is the name of the one you've started with? I bet you didn't expect to generate so much excitement, did you? LOL
How would you know if you have a creeper or bush type av??

Morning ^_^
I'm glad everyone is excited about doing this project.I sure will hold up and start right along with everyone else.I have a 2 cuttings I can take from my plants if someone needs a trailer too.
Rob's Galiwinki-(semi) or Sunrise waltz-(standard)
Amy, I started with Rob's galiwinki but I'm going to put that one on the back burner and put another cutting down when everyone is ready to start this project,so we can do it all together.
Thanks Gail and Bonnie for offering the cuttings. That's very nice of you.
Bonnie will you be joining us on our experiment? What a great show plant you will have in time for your spring A/V show/sale ^_^
meag848,I was wondering the same thing about the diffence in the trailer bush or creeper.Maybe someone will pop in and tell us,if not I will do some seaching on the net and see if I can find anything .
jannich;
sure will join the crowd. more fun that way.
bonnie
I don't know how to find out the difference......maybe I will call Marjorie Bullard today (our club president ) and ask her?????????? Hope you can find something about it, jannich.
Wow, Bingo and this!! What a great Aug. it will be fore me!!!!!!!
Yes, I want to find out which are creeping types, too. Sounds like those might be the easiest ones to work with. But I guess any would work if you keep up with pinning them down like they're supposed to be. This is going to be so fun! It will be neat to see which AVs do the best, too.
I can't find my hair pins........bummer.........I just bought some..........(not for this)........I am waiting for Marjorie to wake up.......she sleeps late and stays up late........
LOL Gail. Paper clips will work too. Just snip them in half and you have two pins. I've used them before like that. :o)
good idea....mine are too big but I can get some locally and just use my wire snippers to cut them........
Hair pins may be better, but I never have any of those. We always have tons of paper clips. I'm a "use what I've got on hand" kinda gal! LOL
I have some plastic coated paper clips. I guess those would work too.
Here is what I learned from Majorie this morning:
The Japanese method was 'in vogue' for many years and now people don't use it that often. It takes a lot of patience. (We have that, don't we).........She suggested that after you get your plant going, go get a 5" pot pan or get a clear saucer (the 5" kind that holds the water on house plants and drill holes in the bottom so you can still wick).................they are only an inch high. (I am sure some of you want to follow the exact steps of the article above......but I may be lazy and put them in a pot pan (shallow) once they get going so all I have to do is pin down when ready.........
As to creeping or bushy.............the creeping ones are ones that grow straight up so they are faster, but the bushy ones are sometimes prettier ones...........it doesn't matter though.......whatever you choose. She said that she has also used toothpicks crossing one another to hold down the stem (but gets complicated so hair pins are the best she said)............
That is all I know...............this will be fun...............for all of us to try...........
