First time with outside flowers

Detroit, United States

Hello All,

I just purchased a new home and I have 2 white cement type flower pots on either side of my front porch. I want to put flowers in them and hanging flower baskets along my awning area. I've seen the hanging plants that I would buy for the porch. But what kind of plants would I buy to put in the cement flower pots? When people have those type of plants are they starting them from seeds or do they just buy the type of plants that you take out of the little black things and plant out front into the ground. Forgive me for my ignorance in this matter, my mom wasnt the outside planter. I just got into indoor plants about 3 years ago and so far so good (smile). Please help me, I'm looking to start on this project asap. I need to know everything to the names of flowers to get and the type of soil if needed....Thanks in Advance

If I were you, with it being this late in the season, I would go to the garden center and buy two pre-planted combo pots (which will probably be on clearance) and just rest them inside your two concrete planters as-is, pots & all. Then you don't need to bother with potting soil. You don't mention how much sun the area gets, but you can tell the staff-person at the garden center and he or she can direct you to the right thing. Then next spring you can attempt to start from scratch with good potting soil and pick your own combinations of plants to put in your planters. For sun, petunias or geraniums are pretty and easy to start with, and for shade, impatiens are always good. I did petunias the first few years I started until I felt confident enough to start trying other things! Oh, and some people do grow their own annual flowers from seed, but I haven't tried it yet . . . I'm going to wait and get a few more years' experience under my belt first! For now I'll keep going to the nursery and buying my annuals every spring.

I made mini gardens in mine this year. I planted zinnias, petunias, coleus and geraniums in the same pot. Than fertilized them every couple of weeks with Miricle Grow. I used a pink color blend. But you could use any color scheme you liked.
Have fun

Height and hang are my rule of thumb for pots. This keeps it interesting.

thanks jcoakley and everyone else that replied, that info helps that exactly what I'm gonna do just buy some already planted pots. And like you said, next spring I'll start from scratch.
