perennial herbs for zone 3B/4A? Ideas? Suggestions?

Saint Cloud, MN

I am right on the 3b/4a split and I just constructed an herb garden with a raised bed. Now I am starting to think about what perennial herbs I can put in there. I have put a few plants in, but it is a larger garden and there is still more space. Any ideas?

Here is what I have so far:

chives
garlic (I planted the scales of a bulb from the grocery store)
melissa
french terragon
winter savory
oregano
monarda (a small pink varety)
yarrow
sage (different ones-- russian, meadow, blue and red salvias)
german camomile (hope it will reseed)
italian parsley (biennial?)
cilantro (might reseed)
basil (migth reseed)

Thanks!

I have a huge herb garden and the only thing that is perrenial here in zone 5 seems to be the chive. I just grow it all from seed year by year. Herbs grow quickly so even though you have a shorter season you should still have a good yield.

Thyme is great to have so is marjoram. I have several different types of basil. Keep cutting and don't let anything flower until the end of the season. If you let the cilantro seed you will have corriander.

Dry what you can't use but cutting is the way to go for herbs. I have bundles hanging from my bakers rack already this year.

Many herbs are easy to start from seed and grow quickly so I wouldn't worry too much about which ones are perennial--I'd grow what you like and what you'd use in your cooking, and if they're not perennial then just start some new ones in the spring.

Thanks for the tips! I definitely will plant the rest up with annuals and thyme and some mints. It is tough when you get to -40 in the winters. I have zone envy!
