Hello! We just planted grass in our front lawn about a month ago. Weeds have begun to completely take it over. This is a nightmare because we just dug up the entire 16,000sqf of weeds (all by hand) that took over the prior grass the builder spread. We scraped it clean and brought in 80+ yards of screened loam so there is about 6inches of loam.
We live in Griswold, CT, in zone 5 I believe. We planted URI #2 grass seed and put in an irrigation system. The weeds are taking over the grass. We've been trying to weed by hand but it is impossible because it is such a large area.
We are wondering if anyone had any suggestions. When can we begin using weed killer, or corn gluten etc. and when can we begin using fertilizer? We know that a healthy lawn will force out weeds, but all of our hard work is going to the weeds again! HELP! Does any one have any suggestions? Thank you for your time!!!!!
How soon can I use weed killer and fertilizer in new grass?
I would contact a good nursery in your area and ask for advice. Sorry I can't help you.
There is a new seed fertilizer I think Scotts makes it. Of course, summer is one of the worst times to try to fix a lawn ,though, as it is way too hot. You can check Ortho(I think) weed killer spray that you attach to your hose that only kills weeds not the lawn but you need to read it, it will tell you if you can use it on new grass.
Corn gluten doesn't kill existing weeds and I've read it takes awhile to "kick" in.
Hope this helps somewhat.
