I have 4 butterfly bushes, 2 purple and 2 pink. I got them as seedlings and shortly after we moved, so I put them in pots--the 2 purple together and the 2 pink together. They have now had a full growing season together in the pots. Is it safe to separate them when I transplant to the ground, or do I essentially have only 2 bushes now?
can I separate my Butterfly Bushes?
Rose,
Your butterfly bushes are still separate bushes, but their roots have probably intertwined. When you transplant them, wet the root ball thoroughly, to the point of being dripping wet and then very, very gently separate the bushes. You'll lose some roots, so to compensate, cut the tops back by 1/3 to 1/2 (use your judgement as to how much root loss there was, and cut accordingly).
When they are in the ground, monitor them carefully, keep them watered but not drowned, and if necessary, provide a temporary shade for them (that's why God gave us old umbrellas!).
Good luck with your new butterfly garden in your new home. Let us know how things are growing for you!
