What are the pros and cons of using coffee grounds as mulch? Can I use too much?
Coffee grounds
Coffee grounds contain a small amount of nitrogen, so if you use them around a plant that you don't want to give a nitrogen boost, they might be detrimental. Otherwise, coffee grounds are a good mulch. I prefer to mix them with chopped leaves or compost, simply because that makes a more balanced mulch.
Just a note--I understand that Starbucks gives away their used coffee grounds every evening. I assume they do that in your territory also. Not sure about other coffee shops.
I use my own and Starbucks around my Japanese irises and have had no problem at all. We used to add them to our six compost bins but the irises are loving them so I'll continue using them in the JI beds.
rampbrat- here is a link I had when I was thinking of saving my coffee grinds. I kept them in a container so long they molded! So use them pretty quick.
Hope this helps!
