Long View 2009 #4

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

So jealous, Bill. I need that weed-free lens!!

I am loving all these 'long view' shots. Keep 'em coming. Ngam, I love the first one you posted yesterday. It's gorgeous, despite what you say. I'll take that over my flooded shade garden any day!

TGs nice shot and garden. I love that full cottage look, just lovely.
Andy I think you should be very proud and happy with your gardens and once again some very pretty flowers that you share.
Pix that is such a pretty pic. Soft misty colors, looks like heaven.
Here is 'Pinky Winky' starting up about a week ago, just beginning to pinky up now.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

here is a not so good long view shot of the top of the slope in front. nice hose huh? only use it now to kill the jb's that attack the wisteria and a couple other none blooming trees/bushes they like to eat.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

no it still is a very nice view!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thx jen

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I like your ripply edging wha.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

at my place this is the result of Edging Under the Influence.
Wha has ripplies! LOL!

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

You all have lovely gardens, it's fun to see all the variety.
My main flower bed seen from the strawberry patch. The clematis vines are almost done in the background. The phlox were pruned in late may to keep them from falling over when in bloom, they are just starting to show color. That Turks Lily is featured this week and the white balloon flowers stand out nicely. The large red leaves are canna Tropicana.

I often unplanned ripplies too Katye ^_^ I think wha's looks more like an ebb tide ripplie. It needs some foam though. Wha are you adding foamy flowers to the ripply edge?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

drooooool over the Tropicana. I think this is my last year for cannas. It's just not hot enough here for them to perform well methinks

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

the only thing with foam here is beer d-nut - i need to do some work on that edge it was better last year.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Andy I'm loving the long shots of your yard.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Very nice Kassia. All that work...results a beautiful bed and a lovely pic for us, thankyou.
Bill, so what's not to like there? Looks lived in, I like all the daisy like flowers together, very pretty.
Andy that is really lovely. Very tidy and certainly well planned. Picture perfect.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

You're not going to straighten it, are you wha? Seriously I think it looks nice ripply.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

DahliaNut, have you tried starting the cannas indoors? I potted up some for an early start last year because they are so slow to sprout. They need big pots but no sun until they sprout, then they can go out.
They are loving the recent hot weather.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice density, Andy. I love to see beds without seeing the ground!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I start the cannas in the greenhouse in April Andy but they are soooooo slow growing even in containers.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Mine do great with the pot right in the pond.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

D'Nut, it may be too cool for cannas, then. It's only my 3rd year with them.
Thanks flowerjem, Ngam and Victor. That bed is about 8 years old, filled with extra plants from around the yard, gifts and trades. A quick count comes up with 22 different kinds of plants, most are in multiples. That's not counting all the spring bulbs.
It looks different every year and from week to week.
I removed half the hostas this spring, next spring I'll remove half the Iris. I like the garden jam packed but some stuff spreads too much.

Sounds half-done!

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

It's never "done".

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Tell me about it.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

I have a friend who loves to plant and hates to weed. His garden looks good for a few weeks.
He uses plenty of compost but it's always loaded with weed seeds. I gave him some of my last dahlias last month along with enough of my compost to plant and mulch. This is the guy who gave me the Cannas. I spoke with him last night about some extra marigolds I have and he asked for some of my compost to go along with them, lol.
I got him started in composting but he doesn't keep separate piles for old and new.
When I was a kid we had an old man next door who grew all kinds of stuff. Mr. T. had 3 compost piles, fresh, intermediate and old. He explained how it all worked with minimal effort. I use the 2 pile method because I'm lazy but nothing gets used unless it's at least a year old.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

ok I have the 'the Long of the Short of It' or 'To Make a Long Story Short' pics to encourage others with footages rather than acreages to share ^_^ Starting on the south side looking east through the leafy gate down the pee fence

My TOTALLY fav pic of this series. Doesn't it look like I'm in woods or somewhere really exciting rather than in the city?!? This is taken just through the leafy gate.

lovely gate dnut.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Stepping a little forward of the lilac looking northeast we see the the new beds in the foreground which I just finished this year.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

looking great Dnut!!.. amazing how much stuff you have in there

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Looking back now down the walk we see the southeastest 'blue nook'. I might have made a boo boo cuz I took out all the arabis which used to front this bed but was taking over. I have peonys to put in here in late august and will move the delphs around into the fence corner on the left next spring so it will look better (I think :/) Also I need a cutieputootie container for the bird food as that pail under the bench isn't cutting it :(

Now swinging northeast again we catch the garden shed.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

love that shed!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

And looking north across the 'lawn' picking up the herb bed. Wow look alot of 'edging' still needs to be done! Seriously wee bed in front of the herb garden (which you will see later) will be expanded in a semi circle but the centre of the lawn will remain for the portable fire pit. The grass to the north from the large container on will be gonzoed though and there will just be a grass path ^_^
