Did check Jeff's blog and he posted...
I always feel better once I read his blog, then I know he's made it through another day safely...
Day 11 - Official
Took the morning off and just relaxed to get my energy back. Played a game of horseshoes with the mature people and let them win. Yeah right, all they do now is play this game, my partner after a few rounds just shook his head then started razing me, I can take you mister and I don't care if you were in the war, maybe even the first one to boot.
Now that all my stuiff was dried out from the rain in peterborough and the swamping on rice lake, figured it wasa time to pack up and get mobile, itching to paddle, weird. Have lunch at a chip truck (yum) and I get underway at around 1:30.
I meet my first "loopers". They left miami in may, came up the coast, did rideau canal then trent, down through great lakes and then mississippi. They hope to be in the gulf in november then off to bahamas for christmas before they head home. Way cool, they say the trent is one of their favorite spots, third time they have done it.
I get through the lock in hastings at 2 and they are calling for thunderstorms, sky is clear and only have 24k to healey falls. The first hour is rough but then again the first hour of every day is rough, then I settle into a rhtym and accept the fact it's going to be hours of paddling.
About the hour mark I come across hundreds of massive fish just swimming across the top with their heads out of water, mouth open and eating whatever is on top. At first I thing it's current because the water is circling so much and I'm like where would current come from here. Then they splash and dive as I get near, some hitting the kayak. Was way cool and I got some video. Found out later they are carp and I continue to see them all the way down trent river to hastings. Beautiful views by the way.
At about the two hour mark I hear a trumpet playing in the distance and man was this guy good, I detour and follow the beacon, I find him sitting on his desk just playing and I start clapping. He was amazing with that instrument.
At about the halfway point I turn the point and wind in my face, good cause I am overheating from the over exposure to sun the day before.
Ok, now note to the friends following my trip and texting to keep me company, please don't tell me about the insane thunderstorms in toronto, I'm not that far away now and I don't want to think about it. Now keeping an eye on the sky every two minutes.
With two hours left the rain starts, I put on rain gear and good to go, I don't mind paddling in the rain, I'm warm and dry so doesn't matter, cools me down nicely. Sky looking like it does when lightning is going to happen, I pick up pace.
As I get to hastings, ok can see it but 45minutes away I hear my first thunder, pick up speed even more. I get to the lock at 630 and they let me through. The lock at hastings is my favorite conventional lock, a series of two locks joined and it's like a step down. I'm in the second lock when the first lightning hits, 400meters to next lock and my destination. It becomes a sprint and I stick right to the shore.
I pull up at the landing spot at 650 and out of kayak really fast, it's pouring at this point. I walk over to lockstation but not getting rained on because I'm using my umbrella, oh wait, probably not good to hold up steel in a lightning storm, I put it down.
Wait half hour and the rain isn't stopping, I go get my tent and set it up, now having tent with a separate fly has one disadvantage, takes 2 minutes to get tent up and 30 seconds to get fly on, that's a lot of rain in the tent. I mop it up with my shamwow, ok not really, but high absorbant towel. Get out of tent to get my stuff and rain stops. Thanks.
Gorgeous evening and I just relax and make dinner then get an early nights rest, no more rain the rest of the night. Was another great day
ok, it's almost 9 and they are calling for rain and thunderstorms this aft. Going to get my but in gear and see if I can beat it.

Best/Worse/What did I learn today..visit with friends #116
Sunshine is out, now I have to think of something special to do with Noah..Greg and Mel just left to take Kyle to do the last 2 or 3 days of Jeff's kayak trip...another worry..lol..am sure not..Kyle is excited as can be..
Because Noah is not going they are hoping I can do something exciting with him (?) hmmm doubt there is anything but who knows..have about 1/2 hr. to find something..
Even thought that maybe we could go do the caves in Collingwood...yep, was in Collingwood yesterday..what's another trip...
Called MIL but no answer..left a message so at least they know I was willing to come and do the sewing...took out my materials for the little memory booklets and now I have to clean up my mess....
Always something to keep me out of mischief...
Can't believe how mature Kyle is getting..before you know it I'll have no more little ones to hang around....
Betty, Kyle will have so much fun with his uncle. These are great times for wonderful memories for him. It is wonderful to see families like this.
Your boys are all so active, I don't know how you keep up with them, but I think they got it from you! LOL
Paul is back over at Carries...today they put down baseboard. Hopefully this finishes up everything on that floor! What a project this turned out to be. He will be hobbling around with sore knees for another week...even with the knee pads. SIL is there to help him so should go a bit faster.
Tubby those sure are some good looking potatoes! My FIL called that he is going to need help digging in another week or so. He gets the grand kids all there to help. I love the little red potatoes....just made a new potato salad out of them with ranch dressing and bacon. So good.
Mary, yes...a very abusive childhood and early adult hood from SF....even up to a year ago. I have come a long way. Most of it was document in my "Prayers" thread when my DM was ill...and what we went through. I am so happy that part of my life is over...my Mom is safe in Heaven....and I have new beginnings each day.
This is one reason for my trip with Betty also...I am learning to enjoy life.
Well, I am getting yelled at again to get in the recliner. Wish I knew what was going on with my swelling issues. I think you are right Betty...it is the humidity and weather.
I have some other things I can take care of also. SOoooooo I will be back in a bit when my drill sargent (son) isn't looking! LOL
Debbie
Wow, you all have been so busy!
Betty, that Elvis show, sure sounded like it was very intertaining!
Hope all is well.
I am doing fine. Knee is still swollen a bit, but I go see the doc, Monday afternoon, for a follow up.
Tubby, those fresh veggies sure looked good. Sure you can't pass some over this way? LOL
have a great day.
LK
Just skimming today; I want to get back to base ball game, but wanted to let everyone know I was here. I hate hitting the watch thread button anyways. :o)
Hello All;
Well was pretty out this morning so I begged DH to BBQ chicken....an hour after getting back from the store...we're now under a Thunder Storm warning with heavy heavy rain, Thunder and Lightning....
DH is bbq'ing on the patio and getting wet anyway...
Trisha - I got as far as putting some vine in a vase to root...was going to send some 'unrooted' this afternoon...but rain chased me in....
Liz/LK - how do you send the plants to Trisha? (I'm sorry - couldn't remember who sends her stuff)
Hey Betty - So only one boy at a time in the canoe with DS? I think the caverns sound fun...Noah is your special one...he'll just enjoy having 100% of your attention! I didn't even ask what they made on the garage sale - I was SO upset about all the mess and chaos....I have to say DH made an effort to get it all back in order...and I came back home by 5:30pm....
Deb - God Bless you...and you have SUCH a tremendous attitude.....I can't imagine what you have been through but I completely understand the "Learn to enjoy life" part.....that's kind of a goal for me at this time in my life as well....
Deb - do you just chop up boiled red potatoes and add Ranch and Bacon bits? Or is there more to it....You know me - I'm always looking for good recipes... :)
I'll be back in a bit.....
Going to look at the rain some more! :)
Hugs,
Mary
Hi Everyone!
Betty Kyle is going to have so much fun, and it will be better for Jeff too just having a second person there with him, it is safer that way. I love reading his posts, very interesting.
Storming here, one severe thunderstorm after another, even a tornado warning about 45 minutes south of the house. I needed the rain for new plants going in, the plan was today but if it's storming I won't be able to.
Lol Laura, you're watching baseball and I'm watching nascar. Can't tell what our favorite sports are...
Busy weekend here. Started out Friday Dave wanted to go out, so I waited for him to get home at 11:30pm, and out we went, didn't get home til 4am and slept til 9, cleaned the master bathroom and took about 30 minutes just trying to put my contacts back in. Dave got up about 10, I piddled around with him for awhile while I was fighting my shopping mood, we ate brunch at 11:30, then he got in the shower and off to work he went at 1:30. I left shortly after he did and went to Garden Ridge, Lowes, and Home Depot. Could've spent a fortune but only spent about $100.00 altogether. I'm going to try to post some pics...
About 1 1/2 weeks ago we had a rain storm that flattened all of my zennia's and cosmo's.
Well the ground is a tad soggy, maybe I'll put out the solar lights instead :)
Hey Crissy -
Guess we're getting your storms now....Was totally unexpected!
Mary, boil the potatos til soft...then just cut them up like you would for potato salad. I left the skins on and it still tasted so good. Cut up crisp bacon, added the ranch dressing also. AND because my kids are so difficult...I made a batch with onions and eggs....and a batch without.
We are yet under another tornado watch after yesterdays issues. Although the storm is about 60 to 90 minutes away....we are in the direct line the storm is predicted to travel. Yesterday there were two tornados that touched down in surrounding areas....about 40 minutes from us. No injuries...but damage.
I have been taking it easy today. I think I just wore myself out the last couple days. DH even made grilled steak dinner with scalloped potatoes (boxed..but good) and cressant rolls....let me stay off the legs a bit. And am doing much better.
Crissy we have had so much rain...we have mushrooms growing in the back yard...this is a first in 20 years. They also said this is the coldest July since 1984.
Betty, I hope your enjoying your day with Noah. Nothing like a day with Grandma to make you feel good.
Judy how are you doing? Skittles doing OK? Love the pictures of him such pretty colors. Ahhhh someday.....LOL
Sharran, how are you doing? Rested up from your trip? Your grandson is just adorable. I miss having little boy around.....I wish I would have had five boys! LOL
Well, it is thundering so going to go sit on the porch a bit....I have my Pooh Pj pants on...so the neighbors will be entertained! LOL
Debbie
Thanks Deb! Dinner sounds yummy! DH's bbq chicken turned out pretty good...we ended up with 2 extra 'teens' at dinner so I'm glad I had cooked extra...
Prayers with all the storms...
Finally that huge Tstorm passed through. Waters still high....but I don't think I've seen it get as high (during the rain) as it did today...ever!
I know the yard needed some rain...but geez - it flopped my hibiscus completely over...
I'll be back in about 30 minutes to chat....
Hugs,
Mary
Good Morning!
I read over the last thread and finally got caught up, whew!!
I hope everyone is having a good morning so far.
Betty Dave is going to try to take next weekend off and come with me to Memphis! I need to schedule next Monday off, too. Got to burn that day before I lose it.
Crissy, just doing last of my route, will d-mail you shortly...
Oh yay!! I'm so excited Betty and Debbie, and with Dave asking me last night if he should try to take the weekend off just made it that much better, I so want the two of you to meet him, he is such a kick in the pants.
Just trying to figure mileage now Crissy..
Oh Betty, that's the hard part. When I used to drive a lot I would track mileage but just don't have the patients for that, so I started just hopping in the car and going LOL! Then I realized I put 3000 miles on a car in one month! So I just quit driving.
That's a nice hibiscus Sharon!
Welcome home Shar...
Crissy it's not so much the mileage but the time frame, trying to work as much in a one week schedule as allows...
Think I have it planned, tell you what, won't be bored..between driving and visiting, not much time to spare...
Here's what I have so far...
If for any reason it doesn't fit in with anyones plans, just d-mail...

Goodness, what a wild trip!
Yay! We will plan on spending the night Sunday night in Memphis! Woo Hoo!!
Getting excited, probably will start sleeps like little ones until I go...
Debbie, Suzanne had an excellent point..said I should drive to mom's and leave extra early Friday morning as it's our long weekend and end of July, lots of travellers and the border crossing might take forever..so, will see if I can get myself organized enough to leave after work on Thurs. and spend the night at mom's
That's a good idea, I agree with Suzanne.
Just got back from lunch...Suzanne headed for the ladies room, vomiting, me, tummy is acting mighty strange..must have been something we ate at the buffet..
LeeAnn is still off waiting for results from the tests she's had in Toronto on Friday..sure hope Paul won't think we are too short staffed and ask me to change my plans....am sure he won't...
LindaKay, what did the doctor have to say?
Mary these storms sure can do a number on the gardens...a lot of mine are laying flat..it's been raining here off and on, should have gotten Noah and myself working on the Ark yesterday..just might need it...
Jeff's blog this a.m. - 2 more days and his adventure is over....
Day 12 - Cambelford
I've paddled in extreme heat, pouring rain, lightning, 40km winds on my back, at night, 60km days, big waves, strong current, mini rapids, you name it. I would take any of the above 10 times over not to have a repeat of yesterday (ever).
30-40km wind straight into my face all the way from healey falls to cambelford, it was exhausting and by far the toughest stretch so far. It was a short distance day, only around 10k but it took close to 5 hours to do it, painfully slow and felt every paddle stroke. Should have been and hour and half to 2 hours with good conditions.
I would go twice as fast if I didn't paddle but it was in the opposite direction, tough tough tough. Early on in the day I passed a fisherman and asked if the canal to cambelford was nto the wind the whole way, he said I'm going to say no cause that's what you want to hear. Had a good laugh with that one.
Left healey falls just before 10 after having morning coffee with the lockmaster, these guys are great, got through cambelford between 2:30 and 3:00 and was thankful. The canal through cambelford is really cool, runs right through town. Hanney falls is another step lock and the view is spectacular, good plave to stop, was going to go another 10k but had enough.
I literally got my camp setup and the thunderstorm rolled in, only lasted 10 minutes and the was extremely hot and sunny again for the rest of the day.
I now have a travel companion, my brother and sis-in-law showed up around 4:30 with kayak in tow to drop of my nephew for the rest of the trip. We unpacked everything, lockmaster was good enough to open the private road so we could drive down instead of carrying stuff down the 71 stairs, yup kyle and I counted em last night.
We then left into town to do a little shopping and get tims while kyle straightened up, you could tell he just wanted to get in and try his kayak, as good adults, we make him wait.
Get back and put the kayak in, exact replica of mine but in yellow, good boat. We name it "minnow", coffin II just didn't seem right. He start out for. First paddle in this kayak and does great job. I put mine in and paddle for a minute with him too. My brother then goes out in mine for a ride, sorry bro they don't make those cockpits any bigger. I should have known better though, going to have to be cleaning back hair out all morning now. Inside joke and couldn't resist.
Mel my sis-in-law also takes a few laps, I think she just wanted to see how stable because she is sending off her 14 year old in it.
We do a test pack and. Parents leave around 8, just us kids left. We make yummy dinner and then head into tent, we talk for awhile then kyle goes right to sleep. He snores! I ping my brother and tell him thanks for mentioning that up front.
Rained a little last night and a little overcast this morning, hold off rain. Having breakfast then we are packing and setup for day 13 for me and day one for kyle
Betty hope tour trip meeting friends is terrific I'm sure yo are all excited..What fun it would be..
Time for a Kleenex
EYE OPENER
I saw him in the church building for the first time on Wednesday. He was
in his mid-70's, with thinning silver hair and a neat brown suit.
Many times in the past, I had invited him to come. Several other
Christian friends had talked to him about the Lord and had tried to share
the good news with him.
He was a well-respected, honest man with so many characteristics a
Christian should have, but he had never put on Christ, nor entered the
doors of the church.
"Have you ever been to a church service in your life?" I had asked him a
few years ago. We had just finished a pleasant day of visiting and
talking.
He hesitated. Then with a bitter smile he told me of his childhood
experience some fifty years ago. He was one of many children in a large
impoverished family. His parents had struggled to provide food, with
little left for housing and clothing. When he was about ten, some
neighbors invited him to worship with them.
The Sunday School class had been very exciting! He had never heard such
songs and stories before!
He had never heard anyone read from the Bible! After class was over, the
teacher took him aside and said, "Son, please don't come again dressed as
you are now. We want to look our best when we come into God's house."
He stood in his ragged, unpatched overalls. Then looking at his dirty
bare feet, he answered softly, "No, ma'am, I won't ever."
"And I never did," he said, abruptly ending our conversation.
There must have been other factors to have hardened him so, but this
experience formed a significant part of the bitterness in his heart.
I'm sure that Sunday School teacher meant well. But did she really
understand the love of Christ? Had she studied and accepted the =
teachings found in the second chapter of James?
What if she had put her arms around the dirty, ragged little boy and
said, "Son, I am so glad you are here, and I hope you will come every =
chance you get to hear more about Jesus."
I reflected on the awesome responsibility a teacher or pastor or a parent
has to welcome little ones in His name. How far reaching her influence
was!
I prayed that I might be ever open to the tenderness of a child's heart,
and that I might never fail to see beyond the appearance and behavior of
=
a child to the eternal possibilities within.
Yes, I saw him in the church house for the first time on Wednesday. As I
looked at that immaculately dressed old gentleman lying in his casket, I
thought of the little boy of long ago. I could almost hear him say, "No,
ma'am, I won't ever."
And I wept.

Betty I hope you're not sick and it's just sympathy stomach ache.
aawwww Tubby, that's sweet.
Ohhh Tubby, that is a tear jerker..
Have to tell you a story on that one..
My grandparents raised me, church going, my grandfather worked in a lumber mill, very hard work, minimum pay..
Our Church gave out at the beginning of the year a box with 52 envelopes for donations..name was printed on them...each month at the back of the church was a list of who gave what..imagine..remember my grandfather refusing to go to church after that..they also gave the front pews to those who donated the most...
I often thought, 10% when you donate and make a good living is no different then 10% donated by the less fortunate IF they can even donate....
Terrible thing they used to do...
I've got one as well 'Tubby'
I've Learned That....
I've learned that the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person
I've learned that when you are in love, it shows
I've learned that just one person saying to me 'you've made my day?1 makes my day
I've learned that having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world
I've learned that being kind is more important than being right
I've learned that you should never say no to a gift from a child
I've learned that I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help him in some other way
I've learned that no matter how serious yourl ife required you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with
I've learned that sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand
I've learned that life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes
I've learned that we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for
I've learned that money doesn't buy class
I've learned that it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular
I've learned that life is rough, but I'm tougher
I've learned that opportunities are never lost, someone will take the ones you miss
I've learned that one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them
I've learned that a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks
I've learned that when your newly born granchild holds your little finger in his little fist, that you're hooked for life
I've learned that everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while your climbing it
I've learned that the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done..
Debbie I just check on Hibscus seeds..Not a lot of good seed...
NO problem..I'll send plenty you you just spresd the out on damp paper towel and so what if some don't come..Make up more than one towel depending on how many plants you want..have fun
hope your knee is getting better..
Going to post this one on my quilting forum...
Life's not all light and sunshine,
noris it all joy and cheer.
Foreach has his share of worries,
His share of doubt and fear.
Seems that life`s just a pattern
Like the patches on a quilt,
And bits of shade and sunshine
Are the squares from which it`s built.
All the sunshine squares are pretty,
While the shadow ones are plainé
But you know just how much brighter
Is the sunshine after rain.
And you know that the pretty patches
Simply never would be seen,
Were it not for all the plain ones,
Sewn so neatly in between....
Betty this is me..LOL
I've learned that no matter how serious your life required you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with
Isn`t that the truth..how are you feeling today...meds starting to work wonders on you I hope..Shirley working, company gone or still with you...
All alone am I ever since there good bye..Good thing you can't hear me sing it..LOL
Some what better need to get my blood pressure up..Shirley is pumping water into me like house plant...LOL
Started round 2 of meds today..Hoping they don't kick my butt like 1st round...Need to stay hydrated better. Not a good water drinker..LOL
Does the water have to be without anything in it...see some here in the office put those little packets of seasoning in their water for taste..I`m with you, I`m suppose to drink mega water because of my kidneys, can`t stomach water, think it`s because of my long stays in the hospital that they made me drink it...
I'll have to check out for packs of seasoning..I don't care for hot drink..Love cold drinks..I have not had a Pepsi for long time..Taste buds different..Fresca not bad..
Raining here off & on..
Going to Surprise Shirley & make a meatloaf..I HOPE..No I've made it before..Maybe I'll even remember to put all ingredients in..LOL
My goodness, lots going on today. I have been"on the road again" OMG! So much I had to get done with DD and errands before we leave.
Betty, if something comes up that Paul wants you to change the date....that is fine...no worries here. If your not feeling well....that is OK also. I am very flexible and can reschedule to go another time if need be. Right now only week I can't is around the 21st 22nd...as we move Shannon into college.
Tubby, no problem on the seeds. Do you think I have time to get them started this year....or should I wait til spring? I was thinking I could get them started rooting, and grow them in a pot over winter....and plant outside after hardened off in the spring. OR....do they grow faster than that?
DS is making dinner, burgers on the grill....fine by me!
I will be back in a bit to chat some more...have to help with a few things.
Debbie
Debbie, I doubt very much he'd ask me to change plans...as for not feeling good, I'm fine, just something we both ate that didn't agree with us..tums works wonders...
Sat outside and gabbed with the neighbor, I was talking away and he wasn't responding so I thought, 'wonder what's up' only to see I startled him, he was wearing a headset..lol..
Not good, Sailor was out and he was feeder he 'doggie cookies'..well one or two ok but he says 'Sailor enjoed the afternoon here the other day, my SIL and wife and I were all sitting on front porch..treating Sailor to cookies when we noticed over the hours we had fed her the entire box..' omg no wonder I'm watching what I give her and here Cathy and her mom drop in with hand baked cookies for her, the girls who paint here all treat her and now he tells me this..told him that's a no/no...
Here I was wondering why she was gaining so much weight..
Forgot to mention yesterday morning I had taken out a t-bone steak (did I tell you this already???) so it could defrost..then my plans changed but I thought as it wasn't completely thawed I'd leave it in the zinc...so Noah and I do our thing, Noah buys me supper (Kentucky Fried Chicken) but I'm so full from junk I say 'let's take it home and I'll eat it later'...we come in and there is a steak, still in the zinc, Missy (black/white) kitty as knawed at it and a good 1/4 of it eaten..so I put it to boil and fed it to Sailor...I'm in the living room with Noah, he's eaten his dinner, mine was on the counter in the box...Noah goes into the kitchen and he says 'grandma, you'd better come and see your dinner'..here Missy had gotten into the box and had eaten all but the bones on the breast..the wing partially eaten and a few bites off of the wing...could have swatted her..she begs for food just like a dog does..she's my hunter so I'm wondering if once they hunt they want meat??? whatever the reason, she ate my FOOD!....
Off to get something to eat, get comfy, finish a project I need before the weekend and will enjoy the evening..might even call Jeff to see how he and Kyle made out today....
Talk later
