They're gorgeous! Been wanting to try them in my garden. BUT they're so toxic! What's your guys' take on digitalis? Should I go for it? I'm afraid some moron is going to want to touch the flowers or get too close to the plant risking cardiac arrest! ^-^ (I can see it now: "Local idiot killed by flowers")
Is there a safe way to HAVE digitalis in the garden? Are there any genetically altered digitalis that are NON-TOXIC (yes it sounds like an oxymoron)? Thanks y'all!
Digitalis: Should or Shouldn't I...
Lots of people grow them, unless you have small children around who you're worried might try to eat them, there's no reason you couldn't plant them.
Oh we don't have little kids in the house. I'm afraid we do have "flowernappers" in the neighborhood ^-^. They see purdy flowers and they HAVE TO PICK one! Doesn't matter if it's not their garden too!
So what would happen if somebody breaks off a digitalis bunch with their bare hands?
If you've got people stealing your flowers like that I'd probably plant them in your backyard where people can't get to them--that way you're not taking any chances. It is recommended to handle them with gloves--I think for an adult to have a really severe problem from it you'd have to ingest some but there's no sense taking chances given the situation, especially if some of your "flowernappers" are on the younger side.
