Argh! I have 2 bromeliads that aren't adjusting to my move...or maybe I've been neglecting them due to my move...:( Either way, the folaige seems unaffected but the bracts which were starting to produce flowers have dried out and seem to be dying. Do I just let them recover naturally or do I want to cut the bracts down? Help please! They are beautiful cultivars...I think I have a Vriesea and a Tillandsia flabellata..Thank you!

Sorry to ask, what are you considering the flowers? I assume you are somewhat familiar & forgive me if you are, just in case, the colored bracts in the center will eventually die back naturally perhaps that's what your seeing. Usually the mother plant eventually dies and the baby will continue to grow. You don't want them to stay too wet either or they will rot at the base. If that's not it, you might just trim back any dried portions and wait to see what happens. It could be they just got too dry during your move and will recover with time. Sorry I'm not much help!

There's also a DG bromeliad forum you could check out. Not sure if you're a member, you need to be to access that section. If your not I highly recommend joining :) There's lots going on here!

Okay, the bracts on both of my bromeliads starting producing inflorescence/flowers. I was in the middle of a move and hadn't watered them for a couple weeks so they got bone dry. The flowers shriveling up and dying are not what concerns me...but the bract itself also seems to be shriveling up and dying. When I feel the bract on my Vriesea, it has almost a paper feel to it. Like the insides are hollow...but I think it is a dried up flower???? I will take a pic of mine. In the mean time, my plant bract looks a like this one http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/57385/. But as I've said before, the foliage is very healthy and seems totally unaffected. Maybe this is normal after flowering? But I have another Tillandsia which looks like this http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/32483/ , and although the flowers have died the bract is still nice and healthy. :((( These are my first bromeliads so I know nothing about the mother plant dying and the baby continuing to live...:( Any further help is much appreciated! I'm not familiar with the variety you have. You could also google them for care information since you know the full name.
