Look real close at the leaves. See if you can find any juicy, green caterpillar/wormy looking things. Some may be very small and hard to find. They will eat the leaves eventually and the plant will die. There are dusts you can buy that will eliminate them. Otherwise, maybe it's slugs. You said the plants were in pots which made me think of cabbage worms (I think that's what they're called). They will get on cauliflower and cabbage also.

The worms are layed by a small, white butterfly, which fly's very fast and erratic.
The butterfly lays the egg which hatches into the small cabbage worn which is the same color as the leaves.
I had some this spring and every morning I would look for the worms and just pinch the leaf around them, splat.
A clue as to where they are is to look for small black droppings and the worm will be on that leaf, most often on the inside and to the top of the newest leaf.
I got all mine while they were young.
Good Luck

PS By the way....A Big Welcome to Daves Garden, most of were newbee at one time, I'm learned so very much from this site.
