In the past when it rained my feeder on the porch was standing room only ...but not this year.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

with the cool weather we are having... I am guessing that's why we don't have too many yet.. hope it gets better though

Nice ones Burd!

I had a female here yesterday and today. Skies were too dark for any decent settings.

Thanks also Onewish for the new thread.

Excellent shots Rose! Do you still have the same amount of Hummingbirds or more now?

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks Pelle. I think I have more now as they are going through over a gallon and a half of nectar per day. I haven't counted them but have
11 feeders scattered in the front and back and they all seem to be busy!! I was sitting on the porch yesterday talking on the phone and my friend could hear them buzzing!!

I have concluded that 3 kitties hanging around on my front porch all the time are not conducive to good hummer traffic! LOL

Maybe next year...*sigh*

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks Onewish...I don't have a very large keeper rate either...sometimes the light just doesn't want to cooperate.

Nanny...don't give up hope...surely they will show again!

I finally got a shot of a Hummer on a flower!!

Onewish, I Love your photos!! Especially the first one! Such a sweet pose!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

thanks!!... hopefully I can have some professional shots like you guys... someday....

I had no idea they like cockscomb before Dell's shots... I usually grow those every year... this year I did not... but might have a few that self seeded from last year... down side is ... the spot they are in doesn't really get too much sun and they are always weak

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Onewish...that shot of your Hummer with the flower is just gorgeous! I still haven't gotten one in flight like that...notice mine is perching ON the flower!! I will keep trying though. I didn't know that they liked the Cockscomb either...I had them last year and didn't notice the Hummers on them. I like them though because this fall the other birds will eat the seeds off of them...another good photo op!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

trust me there was a lot of delete delete delete getting up to that photo... I do try and try

I grow cockscomb & love lies bleeding and strawflowers... the LLB I won't let go to seed... only a few scattered here and there... they can get very invasive if you don't catch them before they go to seed.. but I do toss the ones that have gone to seed very carefully into the woods behind the house .. and they can eat them back there where they won't be a problem

funny how you can see the outline of the wings

Yes it is ow! I just put back out the second feeder since I expect the migration with the mature males will start soon.

Marlton, NJ

Well after putting up that second feeder I was sitting there thinking that I haven't seen any other hummers around.

No sooner was that thought out of my mind when a second hummingbird came up to feed from the other feeder as the female was on hers!!!

Everything was cool until the new one went over to the Beebalm and then she chased him off! :-)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

very cool.. I think we only have 3 visitors

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)
