25[?] year old fruitless mulberry tree

Sacramento, CA

MY beautiful tree has monster sized roots and some of them are on the surface of the lawn. my hubby wants to hack some of these roots.he's also worried about the foundation.the tree is about16 ft. from the house. i say do not saw these roots. would make this monster unstable and might send it into shock and kill it.advice?

Fruitless mulberries are known for having surface roots. Generally, these surface roots don't "anchor" a tree, but in the mulberry's case, with so many of them, it wouldn't be a good idea to cut the roots off.
With the tree 16 ft. from the house, you should be safe from roots invading the foundation. Mulberries are recommended to be planted 6'-10' from sidewalks and foundations.
Fruitless mulberries are a fast growing shade tree, and are often used here in Texas by developers to get something in the yard for new houses.

I wish mine were. They're everywhere, growing out from under the foundation of the barn and shed, popping up in flower beds. Our pasture fence row is full of them and they interfere with our electric fence. There were no Mulberry trees on the property when we moved here, only an old, dead stump. They all produce fruit and the cycle continues.

Oh, but I love the fruit.
Last year I made mulberry jam, syrup, cobbler, and muffins ^_^

Ours are reproducing from birds dropping the seeds to them all over. But at least they keep ours on the fence line of an acre of land. Works for us. We had a 30 foot one that fell over one night.

We have 7 that are old enough to bear fruit.

There is one growing in the chicken run. They are going to love it when it bears fruit.

The fruit is yummy. The trees have quite a substantial root system. DH tried to pull a small stump of one out with our big tractor. It bent the steel bar on the front of the tractor and didn't budge the stump. I swear they go to China.

LOL
The only ones that my BF moved were 2 small ones. One is growing, and the other looks like it is the same as when he transplated it 2 years ago.

Ahhhhh Mulberries! We have a tree planted by a bird and my grand daughter and I look forward to its berries every year. I think it's been producing for about 3 years now and this is a banner year for berry production. Huge berries that keep comin' and comin'! This morning there were pair of cardinals having breakfast in the tree while my grandbaby and I were treating ourselves to those yummy berries!

Here's a pic of my little berry picker after our munchfest earlier today!

Yup, that looks like a cute Mulberry picker to me ^_^. I would ask you to send her this way to help, but I want to use some of the mulberries.............LOL
And she is standing in a pretty flower garden too ^_^
I need to get out and pick ours before it rains today. Rain stopped me from picking them yesterday, and from picking the rest of the black raspberries.
But we sure need the rain.
