Last summer I planted dianthus "firewitch" in the border. It survived just beautifully after being covered for a good part of the winter with 3-4 feet of snow. This year the plants have been blooming like mad, until recently. I noticed many of the new buds contain shrivelled petals. The buds don't open. I don't see any insects around the plant and the foliage looks healthy as ever. Could it be worn out from so much blooming, or what? Has anyone else had this happen to their beautiful firewitch?

Dianthus petal withering
I had it happen and I am in SC. Someone else had the same problem in PA. This is weird.
It's been pretty wet here recently and so I removed the mulch so the ground could dry out around the plants. Also cut off all the new buds. So we'll see what happens.
