Rearranging sunny perennial garden

Sydney, Canada

Hi Everybody. I need a few opinions and all will be appreciated. I am planting a Wine & Roses weigela in the centre of my garden along the back fence. I also have two purple Sandcherry shrubs and two Bonica shrub roses.

My question is this: Should I plant the sandcherries on either side of the weigela? The sandcherry shrubs will not be in bloom at the same time as the weigela. Another idea is to plant the bonica roses on either side of weigela, and then plant the sandcherry shrubs on each side of the bonica roses. I want the garden to look better, as I will not be moving these shrubs again. Thank you in advance for all your help. My name is Phyllis and I live in Nova Scotia, Canada- Zone 5A.

Hi Phyllis. How about planting the sandcherries on one side of the weigela, and the bonica roses on the other? If the shrubs are in blocks of same-foliage, same-color, then it will look more restful and a better background for planting perennials against. On the other hand, you may be thinking of creating a tapestry hedge, in which case you could plant in line: rose, sandcherry, weigela, rose, sandcherry.

Are you planning on putting the plants in a single row along the fence? Sandcherry shrubs can get pretty tall and wide over the years. Mine are 8' tall now. I'd put them on the ends with the Weigela between them (they can get pretty large also). The Bonica's are the shortest, and should be in front of the other shrubs. It would give your fence row some depth. It would help if you added another Bonica. It's good practice to plant odd numbers of plants. The color combination you chose should make a lovely display.

June, thank you very much for your input. I never thought of that idea, but I will. I am not making a hedge. I am putting them along the back of the fence. I thought that by planting the sandcherries on either side of the weigela, there would be too much of the same color. This is a perennial garden and other plants will be in front. Thanks again and have a great day.-Phyllis

Hi Pastime. Yes they are being planted along the back fence. Putting the bonicas in front. Good idea. However, I always prune my sandcherries, because I like them as shrubs. Do you or anyone out there have any pictures you could share. I really would appreciate seeing some. I think that the odd number plant selection is a great idea also. Thanks very much for your input and have a great day.--Phyllis
