First year growing Watermelon

Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Hello, My watermelon is just starting to set fruit and I thought I heard that people cover the little guys with baggies or nylons to protect them from bugs, etc. Is this true? If so, any suggestions on what works best? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I've not had to cover them with anything to protect them.

Me either.
They have a pretty thick skin. We did have deer one year that decided watermelon was good but has'nt happened again.

Yea... I just lost one of my watermelons that I was nurturing to some critter's nibbling. I put a plastic zip lock over the other one hoping to discourage any more snacking. They're also getting my tomatoes. I had one big one that I was hoping to let ripen on the vine but the critters picked it and ATE HALF OF IT. I guess I'm going to have to pick my tomatoes green and let ripen in the window. --??--

We have 2 problems with watermelons where I live. Problem 1 is turtles. They'll crawl in and go through the pacth biting a plug out of melon after melon. If they would just devore one melon it wouldn't matter so much but in a nights time they will ruin 10 or 15. Problem 2 is coyotes. They will literally pick up the whole melon and carry it off. Though more active at night, they'll move in in the day light. Friend of mine happened to drive up just as a coyote was going up the hill with one of his melons. Hollared at him and he dropped.it. Friend retrived the melon and weighed it, it weighed 40 pounds. Hard to believe isn't it.
