What expressions (or words) drive you nuts?? - Part 2

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

Last summer, my phone service was messed up for months. Either no service, or the line was so staticky that you couldn't use it. My phone even called 911 - twice! I had the police show up at my house twice saying they had gotten a 911 call. It happened to a neighbor two doors down also, and perhaps other neighbors that I don't know about.

The funny thing was the second time the police showed up, I was out in the yard planting - in my new, empty, rectangular lasagna bed that looked just like a grave! The police officer asked to look around inside the house to make sure everything was okay, and as we went through the house, I explained to him the problems we were having. My mother, who was sitting outside with me, almost bust a gut trying not to laugh.

After the officer left, she said that for all he knew we could have just finished burying a body in that bed, lol! Not likely, since we were right out in the front yard, but boy we got a good laugh!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

O that is too funny about the 'grave' lasagna bed digger ^_^

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

that is funny - although i would not want a police officer walking around the house - they'd have to take my word for it.

when we first moved in we had an alarm system put in that has a silent code to alert the police that some one was in the house and attacking us - my wife thought that it made no sense, how do you know its working - while we were testing the system she punched in the silent code and then cancelled it - well the silent code does not cancel - cops were at the door in minutes - none to happy either - i made my wife explain what she had done - we laughed later.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

LOl! Digger, the lasagna murderer:-)

Dahlia - we have no idea why the rain always affects the internet satellite. We also have Directv satellite, and there is never a problem with losing tv during a rain storm, unless it is really, really bad with lightning. The satellites are close together and both are aimed at the SW sky, so it is hard to understand how one can be affected and the other isn't! I have tried to get a credit, but their response was just to get dial-up as well. They know we have few options here at the moment, so they act like any monopoly acts....without much customer service. Our land line phone company recently became Fair Point, and its service is so bad, the company (now in bankruptcy) had to face the regulators this week in a public hearing because of their inexplicable level of poor service. We are in a rural area, so that's the trade-off, I guess, to the serene beauty of the hills! I'll take the hills and suck it up! LOL

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I'm back in CT!

Here is the link for the guy putting on the telemarketer. It's not for everyone but I cracked up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fd4MKflsPtg

New York, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh I am laughing at the telemarketer. Thanks. I have to go look at that again.

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Happened on this thread by accident while looking for another DG member. Sure glad I did. I have laughed out load on a couple of ocassions. Almost sorry I live in the West.

Here it's POP, but when we winter down south it's SODA.

Sub is the long yummy meat-filled bun. Quiznos Rule !

We say Ray-dee-ator and Dee-zel.

I'm Canadian, so Eh is common, but after spending time with famly in California and Arizona, I have been shamed into using HUH instead. Especially when writing. I am sure they are disappointed. ;)

When excusing myself to use the bathroom, I say, I have to go to the Little Girls Room. (Sorry about that) :(
My Dad (May He Rest In Peace) used to say Biffy all the time (but he'd say it as a kind of joke).

My husband annoys me when he asks where the "Dish Rag" is. I always, heatedly, informed him I don't use "rags" to wash my dishes. Family of Origin thing, I think, and thankfully he doesn't do it much any more.

How about "Sneakers". Here they are called "Running Shoes", or "Runners". I called my new shoes "Sneakers" once, and my daughter accused me of spending too much in the U.S. ^_^

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Welcome, and we do get to laugh alot here. I call mine sneakers, too, cuz I don't run!!! :)

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

tennis shoes and I haven't picked up a racket in over 20 yrs

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Welcome Don and please feel free to post here! My saying has always been, 'If you're northeast of somewhere, you're welcome here!'

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

Is anyone else tired of hearing people say "long story short"? Which is a contraction of "to make a LSS" but people abbreviate the cliche (but rarely, the actual story ;-)
I know; I'm sounding like a grouch.
And then there's "I couldn't care less" used interchangeably with "I could care less."
Come to think of it, I don't really know the difference. . .

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, I am.

I will start a new thread.

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Thanks for the Welcome Victor & Jan. LOL, I am definitley Northeast of some places. Seattle for instance.

Here's one: This is it in a Nutshell...I guess kinda like "Making a Long Story Short, huh? Now, could I care less, or couldn't I ? That one has always gotten to me.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Welcome Don!
I like to cut to the chase and get right to the core of things when I'm putting it in a nutshell to make a long story short.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

My sister asks me, is this going to be a long story? after keeping her awake too long at one of our sister day sleep overs.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Worse than that - I can't stand when someone asks, 'Is this a joke?'!!

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

Hi Don. Welcome.
It's sneakers for me.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

...and another generational term: tennis shoes, because there were only a couple styles. As a child, i did not fancy the TS' with rubber molding across the toe. I argued about it - lousy toe protection. Secretly, I thought it looked dorky. I was 5...Another Imelda Marcos in the works...

And what were the buckles on girls' sandals about? Another dork move: took too long to get them off your footies. A 5 year old tomboy does not have time to waste, and they were terrible for climbing trees.

North Augusta, ON

I just went bare foot no matter what kind of shoes Mom tried to make me wear...still do actually.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Welcome, Don! As Victor said, we have no outsiders here! I made a tough discovery about my favorite sneakers this morning when I was getting ready to take our walk....they have a hole in the toe and I'm not happy. I love my sneakers....lime green though they may be! LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Rarely hear tennis shoes anymore.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ever look through a footwear catalog these days? It's ridiculous! So many specialty terms and categories. Approach shoes, trail shoes, cross-trainer, running, walking, etc.! I'm waiting for 'standing' shoes.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

that's because everyone is younger!
Plus - there are athletic shoes for every sport.
i want to find a - how does DNut put it? "funky-weird" name for the athletic shoes that have so much padding underneath including side bumpers. Talk about firmly planted...Athletic Stabilizers.

South Hamilton, MA

I'm comfortable in my Rockports--may be hard to find now.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

How about Michelin Man specials, Kate?

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

sitting shoes?
are there sub-categories of Approach shoes? what happens after you approach & leave? do you need retreat shoes? What if you want to wear shoes for one activity that are meant for another? Is there a fine?

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I like that Victor! Chubby Chunk Beefy Shoes.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - the shoe police will beat the sole out of you.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

On vacation at Mammoth Cave, I heard the phrase, 'pre-historic native Americans'!!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I remember showing up to play one of my first games of tennis. There was a sign on the court "tennis shoes only". I thought I couldn't play there with my sneakers.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

When I was a kid, there were two choices - shoes and sneakers. That was it.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Exactly. Maybe with rubbers on them when it rained.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - protection was always important.

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

No, there were FOUR choices - shoes, sneakers...and then Cons or ProKeds!

(ignoring Victor's last comment, lol!)

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Oh ProKeds! Spent my first summer job money on ProKeds and Lee Jeans.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Check out the prices now:

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Even skippies have gotten pricey:

http://www.keds.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=1521&itemType=PRODUCT&iProductID=1521

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

Wow, I didn't even know they still made ProKeds. I know Cons had a huge comeback, but I haven't seen a single soul wearing ProKeds since... well, since I was a kid.

As a kid, Cons were way cooler than PKs, but because I had such a narrow foot, the PKs fit me better and that's what mom made me wear. My brother got Cons. Just not fair. I guess it could have been worse. My husband's mom made him wear no-name sneakers from the local bargain store. He didn't get Cons till he had a job, lol.

Never heard the term skippies, (although the shoe itself is very familiar) but man oh man my heart did a few skippies when I saw the price for them! Yikes.

Dahlonega, GA

When we say ,couldn't care less, it's at (rock bottom ) . Makes sense to me , eh? digger
