This is my second attempt at this lilac. The 1st one did not have the bi-color as advertised. Now this one is about 4 ft high but its leaves have been slightly curved since day one. Does any one know why? It does NOT have mildew. Do these lilac "sensations " have special characteristics such as curling leaves?
lilac 'sensation"
yes the leaves curl upward (like can catch and hold water)
Curling leaves on lilacs are indicative of the plant not getting enough water. However, it's very common when they are first planted, or even the year after. Until the root system gets well established they may do that. Deep watering helps the problem. Lilacs don't need an awful lot of water, but when you water them, water deeply. Sometimes the top part just grows so fast the roots can't keep up.
By the way, it's very common for Sensation to revert back to a plain color, so you will need to cut out any branches that have flowers on them that have reverted.
The photos of healthy 'sensation' show leaves curling up.
It may be a common trait for them then. I have a nursery, have many Sensations, but the leaves do not curl. So perhaps it's a regional thing, leaves curl where it's warmer,or whatever. I still say it could be a lack of water. But a slight curl of the leaves wouldn't be worrisome anyway.
My Father Fiala book on lilacs does not state this as a trait. of Sensation.
