Azaela blooms

Edmonds, WA

Hey Gang-

Yeah, it's me the" wilting flower guy" again..sheesh, I know. Please bare with me. My Azaela blooms started wilting the minute I put the plant in the ground, and then they wilted away to nothing very fast, so I removed all of the sagging, spent blooms(and when I say sagging; I'm not exaggerating.).... you couldn't even tell that they had been flowers..leave it to me. Making my "green thumb" mom & dad proud once again. There in a spot that get about 5 hours of sunlight, so I'm not sure if that's o.k. & I know that watering them can be tricky; do you have any basic care solutions that will encourage it to re-bloom & stay healthy. The foliage looks great.

Thanks. The very needy PNW gardener, TIM.

If the blooms wilted & faded quickly right after you planted it I wouldn't worry about it--the plant needs to focus on getting its roots going first, and it will often sacrifice blooming to focus on root development. So as long as the leaves are looking healthy I wouldn't worry. As far as the # of hours of sun, if you're in the cooler western part of WA I suspect they'll be OK with that amount, but if you're in the hot eastern part then they may need a bit more shade (particularly if it's afternoon sun).

I won't be able to tell you about your Azaelas. This wacky weather burn all my to a crisp and died. All the ones i planted this year died, because this weather has been so hot with no rain. The only ones i have left is were the sun can't reach them at all and they are still in the pot.I'm scare if i plant them i will lose them too and it only 3 or 4 in the pot.It has never been this bad were it didn't rain here.

Hey Tim, don't be down on yourself! Most any plant will have some 'transplant shock' when it's set out. I'm no azalea expert but depending on how tall your plants are you could actually prune them back by at least 1/3, just making sure there are enough leaves for photosynthesis (unless they're really small in which case just leave them as is). Honestly it's normally better to transplant and REMOVE any blooms at that time since they will just 'steal' energy the plant needs to start rooting well.

Also I don't know that azalea’s will rebloom (some one more knowledgeable about them would probably know though). But I've only know of them being spring bloomers so you probably shouldn't expect anymore flowers this year. Just water them enough so that they don't dry out (for the 1st couple of months anyway) but don't keep the ground soaked.

Good luck!

Some azaleas will rebloom later in the year but some don't so it depends on what type this is. Even if this one is a rebloomer I wouldn't necessarily expect it to rebloom this year--it might but no guarantee.

I'm no expert either (trust me!) but I think the rebloomers aren't hardy to zones colder than 7...I looked them up once because I love azaleas & that's the info I found.....Tim you may want to check which kind you have.
