My Dahlia blooms are dying

Edmonds, WA

Hey Gang-

I come from a family of Master Gardeners & I DIDN"T get the gene, BUT I am determined to make it work. I just planted a Dahlia in one of my flower beds that doesn't get a ton of sunlight; maybe a few hours a day & the light is mostly indirect. On the care instructions it says part sun & that's what there getting. The foliage itself looks good & the undeveloped buds seem firm, but the day after I planted it the blooms that were already there when I bought it wilted dramatically. I just moved the spent buds; should I be good to go. How often do i need to water them; once a week, and do you think there getting enough sunlight?

Thanks for the help.

Watering frequency will depend on how hot your weather is and what type of soil you have, but newly planted plants will always need to be watered more frequently than things that have been in the ground for a while. The best way to tell if it needs to be watered is to check regularly by sticking your finger down a couple inches into the soil near the roots--if it's bone dry then you need to be watering more often, but if it's sopping wet then you need to cut back. I've never grown them so I can't help you on the sun--I've seen them listed as full sun to part shade, so I think you're going to be on the low end if not too low on the amount of sun, but hopefully someone who has experience with them can confirm that.

I have mine in full shade, because where i live get very hot.I live in zone 8b and it has been in the 100's for the high.We have not been getting any rain either so i water mine everyday. The heat has slowed mine down to because it is so hot here. That is why i have to plant mine in the shade. If it gets hot where you are try putting it in full shade.
