Cooking bacon
I like bacon cooked just enough ,when you hold a slice,it stays horizontal, and my wife likes its when it bends like a u shape!
Since I did the cooking guess who got what they wanted????
OK how do you like your bacon cooked!
Ok lets here your opinion!!!!!!
Those are nice thick strips. I like mine crunchy, but not overcooked, know what I mean?
Don, me and Kel like our bacon, crispy, with most of the fat rendered, horizontal or u-shaped!
Lately it's been a trend in some restaurants to deep fry bacon.
You rotter! Makes my mouth water, since coming to live here in Japan one of the things I miss the most is
decent bacon, the stuff they call bacon here is awful! On the crispy side please. Mmmmmmmmmm!
pajonica
Okay, if I wasn't hungry BEFORE seeing this...Thanks.
Not to offend anyone, but why would you deep fry bacon when it deep fries itself in it's own oils?
I think TropicMan should send us all some bacon! LOL
I'm with you on all points.
Yes I do,so here are the BLT's i had last nite,enjoy!!!LOL
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1012263/
I LOVE BLT's! White bread, a ton of mayo, lots of lettuce, one to two thick slices of tomato depending upon the size of the tomato, and 2 strips of bacon, each broken in half so they fit on the bread.
I'll eat to that!!!LOL
Ooh! I love BLT's with fresh, home-grown tomatoes on sourdough bread. Crispy bacon. This is making me hungry!
Yep and especially right at bedtime too!LOL!!!
As a bacon producer, I vote for crispy too. And with today's leaner hogs, you get more lean and less fat. On some of our own bacon, I almost have to add grease to the pan, it is that lean.
I use to help raise hogs over 40 yrs ago, back then it wast to feed feed feed get them fat as fast as possible, and we guess if they weighed over 265,it was off to market!
We were a peach orchard, wheat farmer,Cattle rancher,we did it all,so we kept the animals well fed,and the owners were in it for the money only, and just wanted a quick buck!
Being out in the field everyday and the one actually doing all the work, was the one that always had a favorite couple animals, that you hate to go see leave to go to market!!!
But then you had to keep the freezer stocked with meat for the upcoming winter!
Wow, I'm jealous! I haven't ran into that problem Anna LOL!
I've never been close to a farmer so I just get mine at the store. Would love to buy it fresh.
Bacon should be cooked until crisp, but also has to have a smoked flavor. (doesn't have to be overly salty, just smokey).
I have found quite a bit of bacon in the stores that tastes like side pork. UGH.
I also like the thick sliced! mmmm, and BLT's...put mine on rye please!
This brings to mind another question about breads!
Is it wheat or White?
You pefering rye, makes me wonder is rye bread mainly eaten by Easterners?
My wife loves rye,I can't take it all,but then I wasn't raised on rye like she was.I never see anyone buying it in the store here, but they might order it on a sandwich in the Deli.
Ohhh......yummy...........a Swiss Cheese sandwich with yellow mustard on 2 slices of nice, soft rye bread. And, not to offend, but in this part of the country (Wisconsin), a mug of cold beer is the beverage of choice.
I read this to the wife, she said corn beef, with sauerkraut on rye is better!!!LOL
I agree with choice of beverage!!!!
Oh, ya, a Rueben.........don't forget the Swiss Cheese on that one too. :>) I have had some nasty Ruebens in my day, and lots of wonderful ones.
I was thinking Reuben on rye. Yum. But BLT's need sourdough!
If you live back east it's RYE?
You live Central its wheat!
If you live out west it's sourdough!
Where do you live if you like Peta???
Pita bread is found all over California. It is from the Middle East and Mediterranean area.
I'll take white bread with mayo, 1 1/2 pieces of thick sliced smoked bacon, 2 slices of tomato, and a bunch of lettuce.
Mayo or Miracle whip!!!!!LOL
Lol Don!!! You're making the lurkers hungry!!
Mayo.. no other way for BLT!
thick sliced, slow fried until just crispy, but still has alittle flex...... white bread, toasted, mayo and thick sliced red tomatoes! Fresh lettuce from the garden - if it's available and still young - that's the way we were raised on BLT's... My kids couldn't wait for the bacon to fry up, so they started doing it in the microwave for 4 minutes, between paper towels, turned over halfway thru. Not bad for microwave, but the time has to be adjusted for thinner slices...
Fresh bacon tastes alot different than the store-bought processed stuff. Find a butcher/local locker plant or a farmer's market and try some, good stuff!!! Otherwise, I buy Hormel low sodium and press the grease out after frying so you can taste the meat, not all the fat.
White, marshmallowy bread is what we were raised on, but a light wheat is always good.. People have adjusted to eat wheat bread, instead of white for their main staple. Rye bread is good for Ruebens, ham and cheese, etc. Sourdough is great stuff, I just haven't been able to reproduce it's starter in the kitchen. I think it's great for hamburgers! But Pita................. I was raised in SE Indiana, and learned to use pita bread for everything....! The new flatbreads that they sell now in some deli's is good for rolling up the bacon and tomato in for an easy sandwich, as is peanut butter and bacon... gee - can you tell I wasn't raised in the city?????? LOL
Thankfully my new hubby and dad in law doesn't like bacon much, so when we have BLT's, I get most of the bacon to munch on!!!!
No Miracle Whip, I've never gotten a miracle from it LOL
I press the grease out of my bacon too. I love munching on bacon!
I let the grease drip on a paper towel, but never press it off,you throwing away all the flavor!!
I got a Miracle,a nice soft round tummy!!!!LOL
Kizmo, butcher shops are far and in between now days, well in the city, there is one on the west side of town, run by the Mennonites, haven't been there in a long time,I heard there prices out priced us poor people!!!!
I sure do miss fresh bacon too!!!!
LOL Jaye,aren't I a nauty boy????LOL
Don, yes you are!!
I've gained 10 pounds just reading this thread!
Patti, I agree with you.. cornbeef on rye.. but hold the sauerkraut.
I know I may have to let a notch in my belt out if a read another one!!!!
Tropicman,
I agree, the Amish/Mennonite shops are fairly expensive back home too. I suppose I was lucky enough to come from farm country, where we or the neighbors butchered their own, or later, shared in the butchering costs of a large animal. The small towns around us had the locker plants (processing) where they sold meat in the front shop, or a farmer's market type store that sold their own beef and pork. About 8 yrs ago, I had a friend who raised sheep and goats, then sold at auction. We butchered a couple young goats for grill meat, surprisely enough, it was really good! Naturally, the older, the stronger.. wasn't a regular staple, but something different. Can't replace good ole' pork and beef, though!
YUM!! We have to pat the fat off the bacon, Dave will get heartburn, his tummy does not like grease at all.
I'll have to try some goat I hear it's quite tasty!
Yes the guy I worked for during school yrs took a hog to a small town meat locker every few months and would share,I'd tell the guy when I dropped off the hog not to spare the sage!!!!!LOL
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man! Now I want some bacon. I made garlic herb chicken and now I don't want it. Guess it needs some bacon!
Just sprinkle it with bacon bits, and you;ll be in hog heaven!!!!LOL
What a fun thread!!
Oh my gosh, i just love BLT's.
Only three stips of Bacon??? oh my gosh, no way, got to have at least 6!
lol, anytime i order a BLT, always have to ask how many pieces of bacon, and yep, in agreement of Swiss and a beer!
Now ya did it, going to store to get some bacon!
Ahhh, reminds me of working and going off to Woolworths for Thursday lunch with my best buds...sigh, those were the days.
