IS ANYONE HAVING TROUBLE WITH THEIR ZUCCHINI?

Clifton Hill, MO

My zucchini are yellow and rotting on the ends and I was wondering if anyone knew what was wrong with them and if there is anything I can do. Also, what makes them grow fat on one end and not just long and thin like they should? Thanks for your help.

Hi, sherlyn . . .

From looking at your photo, the ones that look yellow/rotting appear to be fruits that were not pollinated. If pollination does not occur, the fruit will yellow and shrivel up and fall off. So nothing you're doing is wrong - the bees just aren't cooperating - lol. Looks like you have a few nice looking zukes in their, so don't worry.

As far as the shape of the zukes, they will be all shapes and sizes. If you let the plants sprawl, they will do that. I've had skinny ones, fat ones, baseball bat looking ones. If they were trellised they might grow straighter, but never tried it as the plants just get so huge...

So son't worry and enjoy your garden!!

If you are having trouble with pollination you could try to help by doing it yourself. I went out a couple times in the morning and hand-pollinated my zucchini with a little paintbrush (or a q-tip). All the ones I pollinated have grown great.
